PALM DESERT, Calif. - The University of Nevada Women's Golf team dominated Northern Arizona in the Championship match of the 2023 Mountain Classic Match Play on Tuesday. The Pack earned a 4-0-1 victory, claiming their third team title of the season and setting a new program record for most outright team tournament victories in a season.
Victoria Gailey had another outstanding day for the Pack, defeating her opponent in 14 holes to give the Pack an early 1-0 advantage over NAU. Gailey completed the three-round tournament with a perfect record of 3-0, needing just 48 holes to defeat her three opponents.
Freshman Gabby Kano also made quick work of her opponent, earning the victory in 15 holes. Kano went 2-1 throughout the tournament, and she needed just 30 holes to beat her final two opponents.
Leah John also earned a 15-hole victory, closing out what was a sensational tournament for the fifth-year senior. John went 3-0 over the course of the Mountain Classic Match Play, needing just a combined 42 holes to take down her three opponents.
Kayla Nocum won her match on the final hole, entering the 18th hole up one and then proceeding to win the hole to finish 2UP on her opponent. Nocum went 3-0 throughout the tournament, beating her three opponents in a combined 49 holes.
Anitra Khoth earned a tie in her match, as the Pack secured the 4-0-1 team victory. Khoth went 1-0-2 on the weekend, beating her first opponent in 17 holes before picking up back-to-back ties in the semifinals and championship rounds.
Competing as an individual, Kaitlin Fleiner battled in her match; but, she fell to her opponent on the 17th hole.
Up Next
Nevada will travel south to Las Vegas to compete at The Show at Spanish Trail this Monday, February 20. The tournament will begin Monday morning and conclude the following day.
