PALM DESERT, Calif. - The University of Nevada Women's Golf team picked up the spring season right where they left off last fall, turning in an outstanding performance on the first day of competition at the 2023 Mountain Classic Match Play.
Quarterfinal Round
The Pack was matched up with host school Wyoming in the quarterfinal round to begin the day, and they earned a 4-1-0 victory over the Cowgirls.
Victoria Gailey got things started for the Pack, earning a victory in the first match of the contest in just 16 holes, as she made quick work of her competition.
The Cowgirls were able to even up the score at 1-1 shortly after, as Nevada freshman Gabby Kano fell in her matchup; however, Anitra Khoth immediately put the Pack back on top, defeating her opponent soon after 17 holes.
Holding a 2-1 lead over Wyoming, Leah John had a sensational performance, taking down her opponent in just 13 holes of play and clinching the victory for Nevada.
Kayla Nocum closed out the first round for the Pack by earning a 17-hole victory over her opponent, as the Pack went on to secure the commanding 4-1 victory over the Cowgirls, propelling them to the semifinal round.Â
Semifinal Round
After making quick work of Wyoming in the quarterfinal round, the Pack was matched up with Montana State in the semifinal round.
The Bobcats earned a 3-2 victory over Portland State to reach the semifinals and face Nevada.
Gailey once again started things off strong for the Pack, claiming a thrilling 18-hole victory to give Nevada a 1-0 lead.Â
Kano pushed the Pack's advantage over Montana State to 2-0 after turning in a strong performance to defeat her opponent in 15 holes.
Khoth and her opponent tied in the third match of the round, as the Pack remained unbeaten against the Bobcats.
Just like the morning round, John had another excellent performance in the afternoon, securing her second consecutive quick victory by taking down her opponent in 14 holes.
Nocum then closed out the semifinal round with an impressive 14 hole-victory, fueling the Pack to 4-0-1 win over Montana State and advancing to the Championship match tomorrow morning against NAU.
