RENO, Nev. - Nevada volleyball claimed weekly Mountain West honors Monday morning, as outside hitter Kayla Afoa was named Offensive Player of the Week, libero Kia Kaohelaulii Defensive Player of the Week, and outside hitter Gabby McLaughlin Freshman of the Week.
For Afoa, this is her third Mountain West Player of the Week honor. Kaohelaulii and McLaughlin are taking home their first. All players were also selected All-Tournament team. McLaughlin was also selected MVP of the weekend.
The Honolulu, Hawaii native recorded 56 kills, a .200 hitting percentage, four assists, and two service aces. Afoa also helped Nevada in the back row by recording 30 block assists and defending the net with two block assists. During the weekend, Afoa had a match high of 21 kills against Idaho State.
Kaohelaulii has been a key defensive player for the Pack. The Junior recorded back-to-back double digits games with 69 digs over the weekend. Kaohelaulii had a season and a game-high of 28 digs in the match against Idaho State. The St. George, Utah native also recorded 10 assists over the three matches at the Gonzaga tournament.
McLaughlin did not lose any time and has been a great weapon for the Pack offense. The freshman recorded a total of 53 kills, a .154 hitting percentage, three assists, and seven service aces. In the defense line, McLaughlin recorded 39 digs on the weekend. McLaughlin also recorded five total blocks and 62.5 points. The Windomar, Calif. native had a season and a weekend high of 21 kills against Gonzaga and Idaho State, with a .113 and .256 hitting percentage, respectively.
UP NEXT
Nevada continues on the road for the Cal Tournament, Sept. 9-10. The Pack will face Tennessee State and Utah Tech Sept. 9 and Cal Sept. 10.
