Gailey places third at MW Championship

RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. – The 2021 Mountain West Women's Golf Championship is in the books with Nevada recording a fifth place finish and Victoria Gailey earning third place.

The Wolf Pack notched its third consecutive top five finish in the Mountain West Championship dating back to 2018, with the 2020 event being canceled. Nevada finished the event at 44-over par and placed one spot ahead of in-state rival UNLV to earn three Silver State Series points for the Wolf Pack. New Mexico, which began the day trailing San Diego State by 11 shots, posted the best team score of the day to leap into first and claim the championship by four strokes over the Aztecs.

Individually for the Wolf Pack, Gailey grabbed sole possession of third place to mark her best finish in the conference championship and her second consecutive top five finish. She began the day two shots off the lead and maintained her even par score through much of her final round, staying in the hunt. With three bogeys on the last four holes however she dropped to 3-over par for the championship and finished two shots off the pace. However, her third place showing marks the highest finish by a Wolf Pack player in the conference championship since Angie Yoon placed second in the 1999 Big West Championship.

Elsewhere for the Wolf Pack, Maddy Zunino collected a career-best tie for 15th place in her conference championship run. Zunino carded rounds of 77-74-76 to finish at 11-over par in the 45-player field. Leah John tied for 28th at 15-over, Anitra Khoth tied for 33rd shortly behind John, and Kayla Nocum placed in a tie for 37th in her MW Championship debut.

Sara Kjellker of San Diego State and Lauren Lehigh of New Mexico tied at 1-over par after 54 holes of play and headed to a sudden death playoff to determine the individual champion. Kjellker bested Lehigh on the third playoff hole to claim the individual championship.
