Nevada celebrates Sierra Mello's three-run home run against San Diego State on March 21

Game Notes: Pacific and SJSU

WHAT'S ON THE AGENDA?
  • The Pack (11-7) is scheduled to play a single game at the University of the Pacific on March 25 at 4 p.m. Nevada is 2-0 against Pacific this season.
  • Nevada travels to San Jose, Calif., for a three-game series against San Jose State on March 27-28.

LAST TIME OUT
  • Nevada opened its Mountain West Conference slate with a 2-1 series win over San Diego State.
  • The Pack won the last two games against the Aztecs to move its overall record to 11-7.

SCOUTING SAN JOSE STATE
  • San Jose State's overall record sits at 4-13. The Spartans are 0-3 in conference play.
  • The Spartans have recorded wins over Santa Clara, Loyola Marymount and Saint Mary's (2).
  • San Jose State's offense is powered by Janessa Lozano and Alyssa Graham, hitting .349 and .348, respectively.
  • In the circle, the Spartans are led by Jenessa Ullegue, who has a 4-5 record and 3.93 ERA. 
NEVADA WINS MOUNTAIN WEST SERIES OPENER
  • Nevada opened its 2021 Mountain West Conference slate with a 2-1 series win over San Diego State. After falling 8-7 in the series opener, Nevada bounced back to win the final two games. Nevada took game two, 5-2, after a clutch Haley Burda walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh with two outs. Nevada held on to defeat the Aztecs, 9-8, in game three. 
LAUREN GOATIERREZ
  • University of Nevada junior shortstop Lauren Gutierrez was named Mountain West Softball Player of the Week on Feb. 23. Gutierrez batted .562 (9-16) in five games at the Dixie State Classic on Feb. 19-21, leading Nevada to wins over No. 2 Washington, Dixie State and Montana.
  • The Upland, Calif., native played errorless defense at the Dixie State Classic with nine assists and five putouts.
  • Gutierrez went 2-for-3 at the plate against No. 2 Washington with a single, double, walk and clutch RBI single in the bottom of the sixth to extend Nevada's lead to 7-5. Gutierrez had a career-best hitting performance in Nevada's 13-0 victory over Dixie State. Against the Trailblazers, Gutierrez went 4-for-4 at the plate, tallying a career-high four hits and tying her career-high in RBIs with five. Gutierrez recorded Nevada's lone hit against BYU on Feb. 20. Gutierrez went 2-for-3 at bat with her sixth-career home run, 2 RBIs and a run in Nevada's 6-5 victory over Montana.
  • Gutierrez recorded her second Mountain West Player of the Year honor this season on March 23 after leading Nevada to a series win over San Diego State.
  • Gutierrez hit .455 (5-11) in three games against San Diego State on March 20-21, leading Nevada to a 2-1 series win over the Aztecs.
  • Gutierrez went 2-for-3 with an RBI and run in the series-opening game on Friday. In game two, Gutierrez hit 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run, including the game-tying solo home run in the bottom of the seventh with two outs. In the series finale win, Gutierrez went 1-for-4 with three RBI and a double. Defensively, Gutierrez tallied five assists and four putouts throughout the weekend. 
STEALING RECORDS
  • A stolen base against Stanford on March 5 made Sadaria McAlister the new record holder for most career stolen bases. McAlister marches into this weekend with 43 career stolen bases. The previous record was held by Brittany Puzey, who had 42 career stolen bases.
HOME RUN FUN
  • Senior Kenzi Goins tallied two home runs at the NorCal Kickoff. Her first home run of the season came against Nevada's 5-4 game one win over UC Davis on Feb. 12. Her two-run shot to left center in the sixth inning cut UC Davis' lead to one. Against Sacramento State, Goins tallied her second home run of the year on a solo shot to left in the third inning. Goins has 22 career home runs.  Junior Lauren Gutierrez recorded her first home run of the season against Sacramento State on Feb. 14. Nevada continued its home run streak at the Dixie State Classic on Feb. 19-21. Senior Sadaria McAlister recorded her first home run of the season on a solo shot  to left cetner against Utah Valley. Junior Lauren Gutierrez and senior Haley Burda also registered home runs against Montana on Feb. 21.
  • Nevada tallied five home runs against San Diego State on March 20-21. Sophomore Kallahan Hunter tallied her first-career home run against the Aztecs on March 20. Lauren Gutierrez notched her third home run of the season on a clutch solo shot with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to tie game two. Then, Haley Burda launched a three-run, walk-off home run to give Nevada the win.
  • Sierra Mello and Sam Oliver each recorded a home run in game three against San Diego State on March 21. 
NEVADA DOWNS NO. 2 WASHINGTON
  • Nevada opened the Dixie State Classic on Feb. 19 with an 8-5 victory over No. 2 Washington. Julia Jensen secured her first win on the mound for the 2021 season, throwing two innings and giving up zero runs, forcing zero hits and tallying two strikeouts.
  • The Huskies pounced first in the third inning on two solo home runs to take a 2-0 lead. Nevada replied in the fourth on a Haley Burda two-RBI single to center that scored Sierra Mello and Kenzi Goins.
  • In the fifth, Goins' single to center plated Sadaria McAlister and advanced Lauren Gutierrez to third. Next, Salausa's single to center scored Goins and moved Mello to second to push Nevada's lead to 4-2. Burda stepped up next for the Pack, scoring Mello from second on a single to right. Next, Sam Oliver's sacrifice fly to center plated Salausa to extend the Pack's lead to four.
  • Washington bounced back with three runs in the top of the sixth to cut Nevada's lead to one.
  • Nevada answered in the bottom of the sixth on a Lauren Gutierrez RBI single to center that pushed Senini across home. Then, Mello tallied an RBI on a ground out to short, scoring Goins from third to give Nevada an 8-5 edge. 
KEEPING UP WITH KENDALL
  • Kendall Fritz was named Mountain West Pitcher of the Week on Feb. 16. It is the sophomore's first weekly honor of her career.
  • The Frisco, Texas, native starred in the circle for the Pack during the NorCal Kickoff. On Feb. 11, Fritz compiled an 11-strikeout performance in a 6-2 win over Saint Mary's. On Feb. 12, Fritz struck out six UC Davis hitters in Nevada's 4-3 win over UC Davis. Fritz also recorded the save in Nevada's 5-4 victory against the Aggies on Feb. 12 and pitched an inning in the Pack's 10-0 win over Sacramento State on Feb. 14, striking out two hitters. 
CALL HER MS. CLUTCH
  • Haley Burda's clutch two-run home run to left in the top of the eighth against Montana on Feb. 21 powered Nevada to a 6-5 victory over the Grizzlies.
  • Blake Craft  recorded the win for Nevada, giving up zero earned runs and strikeout out four Montana hitters in eight innings.
  • The Pack was led offensively by Lauren Gutierrez and Haley Burda, recording both of their sixth-career home runs against the Grizzlies. Gutierrez went 2-for-3 at the plate with a two-run home run in the third and a single to center in the first. Burda went 2-for-4 at the plate, including a two-run home run in the eighth, a single in the fourth and a stolen base. Chelie Senini, Sadaria McAlister, Kenzi Goins, Kallahan Hunter and Charli Hawkins each recorded a hit throughout the ballgame. Nevada out-hit Montana at a 9-8 clip.
  • On March 20 against San Diego State, Burda came through clutch again, launching a walk-off home run with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to propel Nevada to a 5-2 victory over the Aztecs.
