LAS VEGAS, NEV. – Sophomore Anna Maria Sommerfeld and junior Hanah Smrt competed in the first four events of the heptathlon and currently rank in the top-six at the end of the first day of the UNLV Invitational. 

To start the day, Sommerfeld and Smrt finished back-to-back in the 100 meter hurdles. Smrt finished in fifth with a time of 14.96, earning her 847 points. Sommferfeld finished right behind the junior with a time of 14.97 in sixth place. The time earned her 846 points. 

In the next event, the two Wolf Pack athletes finished with the same height in the high jump. With a height of 1.55m, both athletes would add 678 points to their heptathlon scores. Sommerfeld would also earn a new personal best, beating her old mark of 1.47m.

The shot put saw Smrt finish with a distance of 8.85m. The distance was good for a 13th place finish and earned the junior 454 points. Sommerfeld finished the event with a distance of 9.58m earning her a sixth place finish. The sophomore's distance would add 502 points to her total. 

The last event saw both Pack athletes finish in the top-four. Sommerfeld's time of 25.34 in the 200m dash was not only good for a second place finish, but a new personal best. Beating out her old mark of 25.62. The time also earned her 856 points. Smrt earned a time of 25.98, earning her a fourth place finish and 799 points.

Currently in the heptathlon, Sommerfeld ranks third overall with her point total of 2,882 points while her teammate Smrt ranks in sixth 2,778 points.  

Tomorrow will see Sommerfeld and Smrt finish the last three events of the heptathlon while senior Emma Dern and sophomore Rachel Garrison will compete in the hammer throw.
