Box Score 2 STOCKTON, Calif. – A six-run, eighth-inning surge by the Nevada softball team (9-5) propelled the Pack to an 8-4 win over Pacific on the final day of the Libby Matson Tournament on Saturday. Nevada dropped its first game of the day, 12-6, to Idaho State.
Blake Craft (4-3) recorded the loss for Nevada in game one. Craft threw two innings, tallying one strikeout and giving up five earned runs. Nevada was led offensively by Senior
Kenzi Goins and freshman
Mia Misasi, collecting two hits each. Goins went 2-for-4 at the plate with two doubles and an RBI. Misasi went 2-for-3 with a run. Junior
Lauren Gutierrez also chipped in with a two-RBI triple. Nine Wolf Pack players recorded at least one hit.
Kendall Fritz (4-1) picked up the win in the circle against Pacific. In eight innings of work, Fritz struck out six Pacific hitters and gave up three earned runs on six hits. Senior
Sierra Mello starred offensively for the Pack, going 3-for-5 with a run and a stolen base. Freshman
Sam Oliver also powered Nevada's offense with three hits and an RBI.
Lauren Gutierrez and freshman
Chelie Senini both had strong showings at the plate, recording two hits each. Sophomore Kallahan tallied a clutch, three-RBI double in the eighth to extend Nevada's lead.
Kenzi Goins,
Haley Burda and
Mia Misasi each had a hit against the Tigers.
GAME 1
How It Happened
Chelie Senini got a big jump from third on a
Lauren Gutierrez hard-hit ball to second, beating out the throw at home.
Idaho State answered back in the second, pushing three runs across to take a 3-1 lead.
Nevada went down in order in the bottom of the second.
Idaho State added four more runs to begin the third to push its lead to 7-1.
Nevada cut Idaho State's lead to 7-3 on Gutierrez's two-RBI triple to left in the third. Next,
Kenzi Goins doubled to left center to score Gutierrez from third, cutting Idaho State's lead to 7-4.
The Pack defense held Idaho State in the fourth.
Ashley Salausa scored on an error in the bottom of the fifth to bring Nevada within two.
But Idaho State answered in the fifth, pushing across an additional run.
Idaho State saw its biggest inning in the sixth when it added another four runs to bring its lead to 12-5.
Mello's single to third scored scored McAlister in the bottom of the sixth to cut the Bengals' lead, but it wasn't enough to top Idaho State.
GAME 2
How It Happened
McAlister drew a walk with one out and then stole second a few pitches later. Next,
Lauren Gutierrez singled to shortstop to put Pack runners on first and second. Then,
Kenzi Goins drew a walk to load the bases, but Pacific recorded two-consecutive outs to prevent Nevada from scoring.
Nevada had a strong first inning on defense, downing Pacific's first three hitters.
Mello recorded her first hit of the game on a single to shortstop to begin the second. Up next, Oliver singled up the middle to put Pack runners on first and second with no outs. Senini then singled down the left field line to load the bases again for Nevada. Gutierrez notched an RBI after getting hit by Pacific's pitcher to give Nevada a 1-0 lead.
Pacific answered back in the bottom of the second, tying the game at 1.
Nevada regained its lead in the third on
Mia Misasi's RBI single to right that scored Hunter from third.
Pacific tied the game at two in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI double down the right field line.
Both teams failed to score the final three innings, forcing an international tie-breaker.
Nevada saw its best offensive performance in the eighth, plating six runs. The inning began with McAlister drawing a walk to put Pack runners on first and second with one out. Gutierrez then got hit by a pitch for the second time of the game, loading the bases for Nevada. Next, Goins' two-RBI single through the right side scored
Jessica Sellers and
Sadaria McAlister to give Nevada a 3-2 edge. Burda kept the inning alive on a single to center to load the bases again for the Pack. Next, Hunter's three-RBI double to left moved Nevada's lead to 7-2. Oliver added another Nevada run on an RBI single to right center to score Hunter.
Pacific pushed two runs across in the bottom of the eighth, but it wasn't enough to stop Nevada's eighth-inning surge.
UP NEXT
Nevada heads to Palo Alto, Calif., on March 5-7 for the Stanford Invitational. Nevada will face Stanford twice, BYU and Cal.
