Nevada swim and dive fall recap

RENO, Nev. - The Nevada swim and dive wrapped up all fall competitions and concludes the first half of its season. The Pack posted a 5-0 record in dual meets while picking up fifth place in the Art Adamson Invitational in College Station, Texas.

Head coach Brendon Bray welcomed two newcomers to the squad, swimmer Jess Kraus (freshman, from Boise, Idaho) and diver Lucia Gabino (freshman, from Madrid, Spain). In the spring, Nevada swim and dive team will welcome two more newcomers, swimmer Reka Nagy (freshman, from Kálló, Hungary) and diver Bailey Heydra (freshman, from Johannesburg, South Africa).

Seniors Donna dePolo, Caitlyn McHugh, and Montana Lloyd returned to the Pack after being given an extra year of eligibility due to Covid-19.

Most recently, the swim team secured fifth at the Art Adamson Invitational. Seniors dePolo and Samula finished second and fourth in the 100 breaststroke after acquiring the NCAA 'B' cut times and rank second and third in the conference. In the 200 breaststroke, dePolo and Samula finished fifth and 10th, respectively, with dePolo acquiring another NCAA 'B' cut.

Senior McHugh was another swimmer with an outstanding performance after swimming the 1650 free in 16:33.10. McHugh posted a time of 51.09 in the 100, 1:49.19 in the 200, and 4:50.48 in the prelims of the 500 free. The senior was also an important piece for the Pack in the relays.

Nevada ranks second in the 100 breaststroke with dePolo, 1000 freestyle, and 1650 freestyle with McHugh in the conference standings. The 800 freestyle relay squad is also placed second in the conference. The Pack is also ranked third in the 50 backstroke and 100 butterfly, with Josien Wijkhuijs, 100 breaststroke, with Wiktoria Samula, 200 breaststroke with dePolo, and in the 500 freestyle with McHugh. The 200 and 400 medley relay squad is also ranked third after their performance in the Art Adamson Invitational.

In just one semester of competition, Nevada has notched one Mountain West freshman of the week accolade due to Lucia Gabino's performance against Arkansas. The freshman picked a first place in the 1-meter springboard with a score of 295.58.

The Nevada swim and dive team is off until Jan. 22, when they travel to Las Vegas, Nev. for a dual against in-state rival UNLV, while the dive team will be traveling to Flagstaff, Ariz. for their dual against the Rebels.
