Nevada Swimming & Diving announce new Associate Head Coach

RENO, Nev. — Nevada Swimming & Diving has added Missouri assistant coach and former American record holder and NCAA champion swimmer Maddy Banic to its coaching staff as the associate head coach, beginning in July 2026.

Coach Bray on Banic: "I knew I wanted to hire Maddy Banic right in the beginning of our search. Maddy is humble and she is someone our young woman can look up to not only because of her success as an athlete but the positive impact she has on people around her and the excellence she expects from her athletes. I expect to work very collaboratively with her and want her to be part of every aspect of our program and have a role with every athlete on our team. She is recommended from coaches at the highest level of our sport, and I am so glad that our search connected with her professional goals to end up landing here at Nevada. We want to elevate to a championship level in our conference next season and increase our presence and impact at NCAA's and I think we have the perfect candidate. I'm so excited to work with her!"

Banic arrives in Reno following three seasons on staff as an assistant coach at Missouri, where she helped guide the Tigers to national‑level success. Across her tenure, the Tigers qualified 11 athletes to the NCAA Championships.

Before joining the staff at Missouri, Banic served as a volunteer assistant at her alma mater, Tennessee, during the 2022–23 season. She contributed to one of the most successful years in Lady Vols history, helping the women's team finish second at the SEC Championships and eighth at the NCAA Championships. The Tennessee men placed third at SECs and seventh nationally, marking the first time both programs secured Top‑10 NCAA finishes in the same season.

A nine-time SEC champion, 12‑time All‑America selection and National Champion relay swimmer, Banic also competed professionally in the International Swimming League, racing butterfly events for LA Current (2020), Energy Standard (2021–22) and Tennessee Elite.  During the ISL Grand Final in 2020 representing the LA current, Banic broke the American record in the 50-meter butterfly in 24.80.   Following her dominant ISL performances, she retired from elite competition in 2022 to begin her coaching career.

At Tennessee, Banic closed out a standout collegiate career in 2019 by winning an NCAA title as part of the Lady Volunteers'  200 medley relay, setting a program record of 1:34.10. Over her four seasons (2015–19), she earned 12 All‑America honors and helped the Lady Vols' 200 free relay to national finishes of second, third and sixth. A four‑time First Team All‑SEC honoree, she amassed 16 SEC medals, including nine gold, and still ranks among Tennessee's all‑time best in the 50 free (second, 21.54) and 100 fly (fourth, 51.19). She appears on 12 relay lineups that remain inside the program's all‑time Top 10.

A native of Midlothian, Virginia, Banic earned her bachelor's degree in kinesiology from Tennessee in 2019 and her masters degree from Missouri with a focus on positive coaching and athletic leadership in 2026.
