Game Preview: Air Force

RENO, Nev. – The Nevada women's basketball team is back on the road for a pair of games, starting with a conference contest at Air Force this Wednesday, Feb. 5 at 5:30 p.m. PT from Clune Arena in Colorado Springs.

It has been nearly two months since the Wolf Pack and Falcons last met, with Air Force earning a 68-61 win in Reno in early December. Since that December meeting, Nevada is 6-9 overall while Air Force is 3-9. The Wolf Pack has wins in two of its last five games, while Air Force enters Wednesday's game looking to snap a six-game losing streak. Nevada holds a 14-5 overall record against Air Force in the all-time series, but is just 2-2 against the Falcons in the last three seasons.

The Wolf Pack is led on the stat sheet by sophomore Essence Booker, who has crept her points per game average up to 12.0 after a 19-point performance last time out. Booker is shooting above 50 percent from the field in her last two games, which included 17 points in the win over Colorado State and 19 points against Boise State, just two points shy of tying her career high. She has been on fire as of late, averaging over 15 points per game in her last five. Another sophomore, Imani Lacy, has also been playing well as of late. Lacy has scored in double figures in three consecutive games, including a game and career-high 28 points against Boise State on Saturday. Lacy finished the game 8-of-14 from the field and was 12-of-14 from the free throw line, both of which were career highs.

Air Force has struggled to find wins this season, but continues to play teams tough with many close losses on their schedule. The Falcons are led by Kaelin Immel, who is averaging 15.3 points per game this season, fifth-best in the Mountain West. Immel leads her team in a number of categories, including field goal percentage (40.5), made 3-pointers (30) and assists (48). In the rebounding department, the Falcons also boast one of the conference's best in that area as Emily Conroe's 7.3 rebounds per game have her eighth in the league.

ON THE AIR
Doug Greenwald will have the call in Northern Nevada on CBS Sports Radio 94.1 FM and 1450 AM with a 20 minute pregame show prior to tipoff. Fans can also tune in to listen to Greenwald's broadcast online at TuneIn.com or via the TuneIn app.

The game will also be live streamed on the Mountain West Network.

SERIES HISTORY
The all-time series between Air Force and Nevada is becoming more rich as the years move along. The series is up to 19 games now, with the Wolf Pack holding the advantage, 14-5. Nevada enters this weekend's contest having won four of its last six over the Falcons. It was Air Force though that captured the last meeting between these two teams, which was nearly two months ago. The Falcons earned a 68-61 victory on Dec. 7 over the Wolf Pack, which marked Nevada's first conference game of the season.

CAPTURE THE ESSENCE
Sophomore Essence Booker has been on fire in the last five games. The Las Vegas native is averaging 15.2 points and 5.0 rebounds per game in her last five outings. The last two games in particular have been kind to Booker as she totaled 17 points in the win over Colorado State and added 19 against Boise State, two shy from tying her career high. Her 19 points against the Broncos marked her highest scoring output since she scored 21 on Nov. 9. In the last two games Booker is shooting 51.9 percent from the field and over 40 percent from beyond the arc.

MAR OH MAR
Senior Marguerite Effa has really picked up her play as of late. The Los Angeles, Calif. native had the game of her career vs. SJSU. Effa totaled 31 points and 15 rebounds, both of which are career highs, to post her second double-double of the season. She was nearly unstoppable as she connected on 71.4 percent of her shots, hitting 15-of-21, setting career highs there too. Effa is just the sixth player in the Mountain West this season to score 30+ points in a single game. She is the only player to score 30+ points in a single game and record a double-double while doing so. Effa has now scored in double figures in six of her last eight games and is averaging 16.0 points per game in that span.

CAN YOU ASSIST ME?
The Wolf Pack has been one of the best teams in the Mountain West in terms of sharing the basketball. Heading into Wednesday's game against Air Force, Nevada ranks fifth in the conference in assists per game, averaging 13.95 per game. The Pack has dished out at least 10 assists in all but three of its 22 games, including a 20-assist game at Portland State. Nevada is led in the assist department by one of its rookies in Jená Williams, who has 56 on the year. Williams was dynamite in the team's last game against Boise State, dishing out a season-high eight assists to zero turnovers. She has 12 assists to no turnovers in her last two games. Additionally, Williams ranks 13th in the MW averaging 2.82 assists per game in league play.

MILESTONE WATCH
Nevada has a few players who are approaching milestones, some of whom could hit those numbers Wednesday evening at Air Force.

Imani Lacy - 9 rebounds shy of 200; 15 points shy of 400
Jacqulynn Nakai - 24 points shy of 100
Essence Booker - 3 assists shy of 100
Amaya West - 35 points shy of 200

DON'T FORGET ABOUT IMANI
Sophomore Imani Lacy has quietly been one of the most consistent Wolf Pack players through 22 games this season. In the Pack's home game against Boise State, Lacy posted the second 20-point game of her career, and first this season, after scoring a game and career-high 28 points. Lacy was terrific in that game, hitting 8-of-14 from the field and 12-of-14 from the free throw line, both which were career highs. She has been especially impressive this season with her free throw shooting and shot blocking. Lacy currently leads the conference in blocks per game at 1.44, and ranks sixth in the league in free throw shooting, hitting 72.2 percent.

UP NEXT: ROAD SWING CONTINUES
Nevada will head straight to San Jose, Calif. from Colorado and take on the Spartans of SJSU this Saturday, Feb. 8 at 2 p.m. The Spartans have been the surprise team in the Mountain West this season. SJSU was predicted to finish last in the conference standings this year but is currently 9-2 in league play and in second place behind Fresno State.
