MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - Nevada maintains its second place position through day two of the Mountain West Championships. San Diego State is still in first with 634 points with the Pack scoring 442.5.
Wyoming (371), UNLV (337), Fresno State (311) and Boise State (294) mark third through sixth, while Colorado State (274.5) sits in seventh and New Mexico (253) in eighth. San José State (196) and Air Force (161) round out the standings.
The morning saw the prelim action for the 3-meter dive, 500 free, 200 IM and the 50 free. Nevada qualified at least two in each of the events. On the dive side, freshman
Jessie Nowotny took second in the prelims while
Linnea Sorensen was third, both moved on to the evening session while sophomore
Laura Isabel Vazquez Lopez had a tough day and finished 24th overall.
In the evening session, Sorensen was the top finisher with a fifth place finish in the 3-meter event with a score of 346.55 while Nowotny was seventh with 323.90.
In the 500 free, captain
Caitlyn McHugh qualified for the A final while teammate
Lindsey Soule qualified for the C final.
Destiny Kling finished 26th overall with a time of 5:00.61. In the finals, McHugh took fourth to score 25.5 points with a time of 4:50.60 and Soule scored 5 points for the Pack with a 20th overall finish and fourth in the C final.
Nevada qualified five swimmers in the 200 IM with defending champion,
Andressa Cholodovskis and
Donna dePolo both making the A cut while
Julia Adamczyk and
Wiktoria Samula were in the B final and finally,
Benedict Nagy in the C final.
Cholodovsksis visited the podium to claim her silver medal in the 200 IM after posting a time of 1:59.11, a season best and an NCAA B cut time. Fellow A cut final member, dePolo took sixth overall with a time of 2:01.36.
Newcomer, Nagy won the C final for a 17th overall finish with a time of 2:03.73, a new personal record for the Reno native. In the B final, Adamczyk finished second in the heat and 10th overall with a time of 2:00.71 just before Samula touched with a time of 2:03.51 for a 16th overall finish. The five combined for 89 points in just one event.
The final individual swimming event of the night was the 50 free final in which
Josien Wijkhuijs was the lone Nevada member to qualify for the A final and took sixth overall with a time of 22.91 and score 24 points. The sophomore swam an NCAA B cut time of 22.72 in the prelims earlier today.
Colette Berkenfield swam in the B finals for the 50 free and took 21st overall with a time of 23.44.
Wijkhuijs, Samula, Cholodovskis and Berkenfield combined for the 400 medley relay that saw a second place finish to visit the podium once more today. The relay squad finished with a time of 3:39.30 to score 54.
Competition continues Friday morning with preliminary heats starting at 9 a.m. PT.
