NEVADA KICKS OFF SEASON AT PORTLAND
The Nevada baseball team is set to begin its 2020 campaign this Friday, Feb. 14 at the University of Portland for a four-game series. The Wolf Pack is coming off a 2019 campaign where it won 30 games for the second time under head coach
T.J. Bruce and made the MW tournament for the seventh-consecutive season including all four under Bruce. Nevada had four players earn All-MW honors last season, including returning outfielder
Jaylon McLaughlin who earned a first-team All-MW selection.
Joshua Zamora, ranked as the 12th-best third baseman in the country by D1 Baseball earned second-team honors last year as did
Weston Hatten and
Grant Ford who graduated and was drafted following the year, respectively.
Nevada has been picked to finish third in the MW Preseason Poll that was released on Tuesday, as the Pack garnered two first-place votes. They trail San Diego State, whom Nevada eliminated in the 2019 Tournament, as the Aztecs earned four first-place votes and are predicted to win the league. Edging Nevada by just four points is 2019 MW Champion Fresno State, who also earned two first-place votes.
Three members of the Pack were named to the Preseason All-MW team on Tuesday as well, as McLaughlin, Zamora and senior first baseman
Dillan Shrum were all honored. It was the first preseason accolade for Shrum and McLaughlin, while it was the second for Zamora.
McLaughin had a breakout campaign in 2019, leading Nevada with a .339 batting average and stole 25 bases, good for the seventh-most in a single season in Nevada history. Zamora launched eight bombs and led the Pack with 38 RBI on the season. Shrum, despite an injury-shortened season, tied the team high with 10 homers, including eight in MW which play which was tied for the most in the conference.
Nevada will have lots of new faces to begin the new year, as the Pack boasts 19 newcomers this season including 12 junior-college transfers, six freshmen and one graduate transfer. The redshirt-senior,
Kiambu Fentress, will roam the outfield for Nevada this year after being part of the 2019 College World Series champion Vanderbilt team.
Nevada is tied with Portland all-time 3-3 in six meetings with the Pilots, with its last meeting against the Pilots coming in 2006. Portland got the best of the Pack in that game, 7-4, but finished 25-27 last season and 11-9 at home.
Due to renovations currently taking place at their home ballpark, the four-game series between Nevada and Portland will take place at the Ridgefield Outdoor Complex. John Ramey will have the call of the game on 94.1 FM/1450 AM and on the TuneIn app.
Owen Sharts will get the start on Friday for the Wolf Pack, while
Jake Jackson and transfer
Shane O'Malley will each start one game of the double header slated for Saturday. No starter has been named for the Wolf Pack for Sunday's action.
