RENO, Nev. – University of Nevada head volleyball coach
Lee Nelson announced on Wednesday that 6'1 middle blocker Mary Fonoimoana (Laie, Hawai'i) has signed a national letter of intent to join the Wolf Pack in fall 2021.
Fonoimoana is a two-sport athlete at Kahuku High & Intermediate, participating in volleyball and basketball. She plays club volleyball for Spike and Serve with fellow Wolf Pack signee Sia Liilii.
"Mary brings the ability to play way above the net and a great work ethic. Part of what convinced us that Mary would be a great fit was the workouts she was doing during quarantine," Nelson said. "At 17, it's easy to find a reason to sit around when, due to the pandemic, there is no volleyball to be played, but Mary continued to get after it in the weight-room and in her conditioning on the beach. She comes from a very motivated and talented family of athletes, and we think she is going to fit in very well with our culture."
Fonoimoana's parents were student-athletes at the University of Hawai'i-Monoa. Her father played football for the Rainbow Warriors and her mother starred on the volleyball team.
Fonoimoana chose Nevada over offers from New Mexico, New Mexico State, Eastern Washington, Dixie and Fairfield. She joins Sophie Mangold (Powell, Ohio) and Sia Liilii (Honolulu, Hawai'i) in the 2021 recruiting class.
