Game Preview: Wyoming

RENO, Nev. – Following a short two-game homestand, Nevada is back on the road to face the Cowgirls of Wyoming this Wednesday, Jan. 15 at 5:30 p.m. PT from Arena Auditorium in Laramie, Wyo.

The Wolf Pack earned its first Mountain West win of the season on Saturday, taking down Utah State at home 69-60. The team evened its overall record to 8-8 with the win and snapped a season-long three game losing streak. In that game freshman Dom Phillips played extremely well as she tied her career high of 17 points, which included knocking down three 3-pointers, also tying her career high. Nevada had three others score in double figures as Imani Lacy added 12 points in her first in-game action since Dec. 21, Marguerite Effa contributed 11 points and Nia Alexander scored 10.

The Cowgirls, who are under the direction of first-year head coach Gerald Mattinson, have a similar overall record to the Wolf Pack as they sit at 7-8 but are 3-3 in league play. Wyoming enters Wednesday's game having lost its last three games, but has won four of its seven wins at home. The Cowgirls are led by one of their sophomores in Tereza Vitulova, who leads the team and ranks ninth in the Mountain West averaging 14.1 points per game. Additionally, Wyoming boasts one of the top defenses in the conference as the team leads the league in scoring defense, allowing just 58.47 points per game.

ON THE AIR
Doug Greenwald will have the call in Northern Nevada on CBS Sports Radio 94.1 FM and 1450 AM with a 20 minute pregame show prior to tipoff. Fans can also tune in to listen to Greenwald's broadcast online at TuneIn.com or via the TuneIn app.

The game will also be live streamed on the Mountain West Network.

SERIES HISTORY
Nevada and Wyoming have been playing basketball against one another since the early 80s, but have just 23 games between them in the nearly 40-year span. Overall the Cowgirls own the all-time series, winning 16 times in 23 attempts. On Wednesday the Wolf Pack will be trying to secure its first win in Laramie since Jan. 5, 2000 when Nevada beat Wyoming 90-81 in overtime. Under head coach Amanda Levens the Pack is 1-3 against the Cowgirls, but that one win sent Nevada to the MW Championship game in 2018.

MAR OH MAR
Senior Marguerite Effa had the game of her career last Wednesday night vs. SJSU. Effa totaled 31 points and 15 rebounds, both of which are career highs, to post her second double-double of the season. She was nearly unstoppable as she connected on 71.4 percent of her shots, hitting 15-of-21, setting career highs there too. Effa is now just the fifth player in the Mountain West this season to score 30+ points in a single game. She is the only player to score 30+ points in a single game and record a double-double while doing so.

NON-CONFERENCE SUCCESS
The Wolf Pack concluded its non-conference schedule by defeating Cal Poly 71-40, marking its largest margin of victory of the season and largest since February of 2015. The 40 points surrendered to the Mustangs is tied for seventh-fewest allowed by an opponent in program history. Nevada posted a 7-4 record in its non-league slate, marking its second winning record in non-conference play in two of the last three years. During that stretch the Pack outscored its opponents by an average of 5.9 points per game and outrebounded teams by 1.5 rebounds per game.

CAN YOU ASSIST ME?
The Wolf Pack has been one of the best teams in the Mountain West in terms of sharing the basketball. Heading into Wednesday's game at Wyoming, Nevada ranks fifth in the conference in assists per game, averaging 13.81 per game. The Pack has dished out at least 10 assists in all but two of its 16 games, including a 20-assist game at Portland State. Nevada is led in the assist departmant by one of its rookies in Jená Williams. Williams has 37 assists to just 18 turnovers, and dished out a team-high five assists in the team's win over Cal Poly. Nevada has four players with positive assist to turnover ratios through 16 games led by freshman Alyssa Jimenez who has 21 assists to just nine turnovers.

She returned to the floor for the first time since Dec. 21 to help Nevada earn a 69-60 win over Utah State, scoring 12 points in her return. Lacy currently leads the team and is in the top 20 in the conference averaging 12.0 points per game. She has really improved her free throw shooting and shot blocking this season as well as she ranks ninth in the MW in free throw percentage (70.2) and is second in blocked shots per game (1.58 bpg).

UP NEXT: BACK HOME AGAINST THE AZTECS
Nevada will return home to Lawlor Events Center for one game before embarking on a two-game road swing next week.
