Nevada set to open conference play with Fresno State and San Diego State

RENO, Nev. - With the non-conference slate wrapped up, the Nevada Wolf Pack (10-2, 0-0) will travel to Fresno, Calif. to take on Fresno State (7-5, 0-0) on Thursday; before hosting San Diego State at Virginia Street Gym on Saturday at 1pm.

The Wolf Pack has now won more matches than the 2018 season and already matched the number of wins in the 2017 while having the best start since 2001; team went 11-1 to open that year.

Currently the offense of the Pack has been anchored by outside hitter in junior Kayla Afoa and middle blocker Brianna Souza, but sophomore Kili Robins and freshman middle blocker Sydney Petersen are not far behind in points. This year Nevada has shown a more balanced offensive attack with multiple members getting touches but the defense is what has been clicking up front.

Petersen has a team high number of blocks with 66 while Souza and Kassie McGill each have 41 block assists Just for a comparison, the Pack has already recorded 116 total blocks (in 12 matches) while the 2018 squad finished the year with 180, in 29 matches.

The Pack also has made more appearances in the national rankings than last year. Currently, Petersen leads the Mountain West in total blocks and is third in blocks per set while also ranking 15th in the nation for total blocks. Dalyn Burns ranks first in the conference and 23rd in the nation for total assists while Afoa ranks first in conference and 18th in the nation for total attacks.

Nevada is starting the conference slate with a road match against Fresno State, who is currently 7-5 and 2-1 in the Save Mart Center, before returning to VSG for a home match against San Diego State. The Fresno State match is set to start at 6pm on Thursday with the San Diego State match set for 1pm PT.
