Rutherford snags runner-up spot in Idaho

COEUR d'ALENE, Idaho – The Nevada women's golf team collected its first top five finish of the season on Tuesday, claiming third place at the Coeur d'Alene Collegiate Invitational, hosted by Gonzaga.

The Wolf Pack posted the third-best team round of the final day in the 16-team field, carding a 9-over 293. For the entire tournament, Nevada finished at 24-over par, four shots behind BYU for the runner-up spot. Tournament host Gonzaga, which entered the final round with a 12-shot lead, took the team title by just four strokes over the Cougars. The Pack had a balanced week of scoring as it ranked fourth in the field with 32 birdies and second with 170 pars.

Senior Katy Rutherford put together a solid performance for the Wolf Pack as she snagged sole possession of the runner-up spot, a career-best finish. Rutherford was steady all tournament long with rounds of 72, 71 and 72 to finish at 2-over. Her 11 birdies in the 54-hole span was tied with one other for the tournament lead. Rutherford finished just three shots behind individual champion Allysha Mae Mateo of BYU, who was the only player in the field of 87 to stay under par.

Ujimori carded a final round 75 to go along with rounds of 69 and 75 in rounds one and two to finish at 6-over par. The biggest jump of the day went to sophomore Victoria Gailey, who leapt 24 spots to tie for 14th place. Gailey turned in the low Wolf Pack round of the day with an even par 71. She pieced together three birdies in a four-hole span during her final round.
