RENO, Nev. – Competing in the 119^th U.S. Amateur Championship for the first time in his career, University of Nevada men's golf senior Sam Harned shot a 147 at the Pinehurst Resort and Country Club in Pinehurst, N.C. Harned just missed the cut of 145 leaving him two shots from advancing to match play.  Harned posted a 5-over 75 in his first round and improved in round two shooting a 2-over 72.
 
A former walk-on turned scholarship player at Nevada, he earned one of three qualifying spots at the two-round qualifier at Castlewood Country Club in Pleasanton, Calif. Harned had some work to do after shooting a 1-under 71 after the first round, but came back firing in round two carding a 5-under 67 to jump up the leaderboard. The Rocklin, Calif. native finished the qualifier in a three-way tie for two spots at 6-under par. Needing a playoff to determine who would advance, Harned bested Cameron Henry of Los Gatos, Calif. to snag one of the three advancing spots.
