RENO, Nev. – The Nevada women's track and field team is set for this week's Mountain West Outdoor Track and Field Championships, hosted by Fresno State.
At last month's Mountain West Challenge, the Wolf Pack came out victorious, topping the defending conference champion SDSU Aztecs as well as last year's runner up in the UNLV Rebels. Nevada finished with 187 points at the Las Vegas meet.
Last season, Nevada took eighth at the conference championships with a total of 57.5 points.
The Wolf Pack has three athletes leading the conference in four different events. Sophomore
Nicola Ader leads the way in the heptathlon with a score of 5,590, and the high jump with a mark of 5' 11.25" (1.81 meter). Sophomore
Alex Bohlman leads the javelin with a throw of 151' 9" (46.26 m), and junior
Karoline Sauer leads the 400m hurdles with a time of 59.90 seconds.
Nevada has had four individual outdoor conference champions since joining the Mountain West before the 2012-13 season. Last season Sauer won the 400m hurdles, and in 2017
Nicole Wadden topped the heptathlon. In 2013, the Wolf Pack had two individual champions, with La Tijera Avery winning the high jump and Kerri Simmons Jr. winning the shot put.
Sauer could become the Pack's first athlete to win an event in back-to-back seasons since joining the Mountain West. Ader could become the first to win events in both indoor and outdoor conference championships since joining the Mountain West. Ader won the indoor high jump in February, and the indoor pentathlon last season.
The Pack has a total of 14 athletes in the top 10 of the conference for 15 different events. Leading the way is Ader, who currently sits in the top 10 for four events, including leading the conference in both the high jump and the heptathlon. Costello sits atop three events, ranking 10th in the 100m and 400m races, on top of an eighth-place rank in the 200m.
The Pack has three athletes ranked in the top 10 of the javelin, the most for any event. Bohlman leads the conference, and freshmen
Gaia Osborne and
Anna Maria Sommerfeld sit in fifth and seventh, respectively. Sommerfeld sits in ninth in the heptathlon as well.
Sauer paces the conference in the 400m hurdles, with sophomore
Agnese Mulatero joining her in the top 10.
Nevada has several near the top for distance events as well. Coonfield sits in the top 10 for the 10,000m, while Sickler sits in the top six of both the 3,000m steeplechase and the 5,000m. Sophomore
Hiley Dobbs is in the top 10 of the 10,000m as well.
Junior
Gaby Palmer and senior
Emily Etter are both in the top 10 of the pole vault, and freshman
Gabby Fraser is ranked 10th in the triple jump.
The meet kicks off Wednesday at 4 p.m. PT with the first four events of the heptathlon. Live results for the four-day meet will be available at nevadawolfpack.com/tf, and the competition will be streamed online by FloTrack.
