RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. – After the opening round of the 2019 Mountain West Championship, the Nevada women's golf team sits in third place.
The Dinah Shore tournament course at Mission Hills Country Club featured tough scoring conditions in the opening round as birdies were hard to come by across the board, but the Wolf Pack grinded through its round to sit in third after 18 holes. Nevada shot a 17-over par team score of 305 on Monday and is five shots ahead of UNLV for third. The Pack trails San Diego State for second by two strokes and clubhouse leader No. 27 San Jose State for the team lead by six. None of the nine teams in the field are currently under par.
Playing in her final conference championship, senior
Kaitlin Collom led the Wolf Pack on day one. Collom carded a 1-over 73 and sits in a tie for third in the 45-player field, just two shots off the lead. Collom went without a birdie until the 13
th where she then birdied two out of three holes as she neared the conclusion of her round.
Nevada has another individual in the top 10 as freshman
Victoria Gailey's first round score of 75 has her in a tie for 10
th. Gailey struggled to close out her round, making bogey on four of her last six holes, but collected four birdies on holes 5-11. Junior
Jenny Krause will enter round two in a tie for 17
th after she shot a 6-over 78 on Monday. Senior
Chaithra Katamneni is one shot behind Krause at 7-over and is tied for 22
nd place. Freshman
Danni Ujimori rounds out the Pack lineup in a tie for 37
th after shooting an 83 in her first MW Championship round.
