Gailey and Katamneni earn top five finishes at Battle at the Rock

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Behind two top five finishes, the Nevada women's golf team jumped three spots into sixth place on the final day at the Battle at the Rock.

"We played really well during the final round," head coach Kathleen Takaishi said. "We definitely learned the golf course over the past few days and took advantage of the scorable conditions this afternoon. I'm proud of our team for continuing to compete and grind it out today."

The Wolf Pack carded a team score of 284 in Tuesday's final round, setting a new season low. Nevada was the only team of the entire tournament to turn in a round under par, and did so on the final day to leap three spots on the leaderboard into sixth place. The Pack fell just three strokes away from creeping into the top five. Grand Canyon won the event by one shot over runner-up Cal Poly.

Individually Nevada had three players fire rounds under par on Tuesday, led by a pair of 68s by freshman Victoria Gailey and senior Chaithra Katamneni. Both Gailey and Katamneni used their 4-under par rounds to jump 20 spots on the individual leaderboard and finish in a tie for fifth place, which marked season-best finishes for both of them. Gailey turned in a flawless round of golf, making four birdies on the back nine and no bogeys throughout her round. Katamneni on the other hand had just two missteps on No. 16 and 17 but sunk six birdies on the day.

Junior Jenny Krause also posted a round under par and rebounded from her second round 79 with a 1-under 71 on Tuesday. She compiled four birdies and three bogeys during her round and jumped 10 spots into a season-best tie for 15th in the 87-player field. Two other players for the Pack also had identical finishes as senior Kaitlin Collom and junior Katy Rutherford both tied for 61st place at 19-over par after carding 77s in the final round.

Elizabeth Scholtes of Cal Poly and Alyaa Abdulghany of USC tied for the individual title at 4-under par. Scholtes and Abdulghany were the only individuals to finish the event under par.

Nevada is back to competition next week at the two-day Rebel Beach Invitational at Spanish Trails Country Club in Las Vegas, Nev.
