Nevada volleyball doubles win total in 2019

RENO, Nev. - Under the direction of Lee Nelson, the 2019 Nevada volleyball team more than doubled its wins from last season after putting up a 17-13 overall record and a  7-11 mark in Mountain West play. At the conclusion of the season, the Pack was sixth overall in the conference standings after finishing 11th in 2018.

The 2019 season proved to be one of records and highlighted moments of success that was kicked off with the best start since 2002, going 14-3 in the first 17 matches. With non-conference wins over Sacramento State, Gonzaga and Southern Utah to name a few, it was motivation heading into the conference segment of the season. The momentum stayed with the Pack as it started MW play 4-1 with notable home wins over San Diego State and San Jose State while also winning on the road against Boise State.

During that run, Nevada posted its first win over San Diego State since 2014, which marked just the fourth victory over the Aztecs in program history. Following that match, the Pack defeated the Broncos of Boise State for just the first time since 2016. Later in the year, Nevada pulled the win out over Boise State in Virginia Street Gym, taking the season sweep of the Broncos for the first time since 2008. Sandwiched between those matches was a five-set thrilling win over the Spartans of San Jose State that saw Nevada complete the three-set comeback to win it, 3-2.

Senior Dalyn Burns had a record breaking season after not only posting her 2,000th assist but also her 3,000th to become just the fifth member of the Nevada volleyball program to mark over 3,000 assists in a career. Joining Burns is Kayla Afoa who broke the program record in total attacks in a single season with 1,283 while also tallying 377 digs, just two shy of 1,000 in her career. Afoa was named to the 2019 Mountain West All-Conference team after ranking fourth in points (438.5), fifth in kills (375) and eighth in digs (377).

Standout freshman Sydney Petersen had a record breaking season for herself. The Snohomish, Wash. native had a single season program record in block assists with 137, while marking second in a single season in total blocks with 147. The talented middle blocker not only posted high numbers in blocks but recorded a season hitting percentage of .317, which was good for sixth in single season records and ranked her eighth in the conference with 204 kills.

The Wolf Pack wrapped up the year ranked in the top half of the Mountain West in blocks, kills and assists with its highest ranking being first in digs with 1,773.
