Nevada defeats UC Davis 2-1 on Lieb’s game winner

First 2-0 start for Wolf Pack since 2006

RENO, Nev. – On Sunday afternoon, the Nevada soccer team (2-0-0) defeated UC Davis (0-2-0) by a score of 2-1. Freshman Payton Lieb netted the game-winning goal, scoring off of a corner by freshman Kylie Minamishin.

The Wolf Pack's 2-0 start is its best since 2006, when it began the year with four straight wins.

Freshman Kendal Stovall started her second consecutive game in goal, earning the victory in both. She has been a staple of a very strong freshman class for the Pack.

"Our effort and our willingness to work hard," said Stovall about what makes her freshman class so special. "I think if we are willing to put in the effort the team can feed off of it and we end up growing together."

The game began in the Wolf Pack's favor, when junior Eleanor Small scored in the 11th minute with a header near the left post to put Nevada up 1-0. It is the first goal for the Reno local while wearing the Silver & Blue.

Eight minutes later, the Aggies would tie the match with an equalizer by Alicia Sloss. It was Sloss' first goal of the season, after driving up the left side of the field and finishing against Stovall.

The Aggies boasted 15 corner kicks to the Pack's two, but it was Nevada's second that was the difference in the contest. Off of perfect placement by Minamishin on the corner,
Lieb got her head on the ball and put the Pack in front for the second time in two games. The freshman also scored the game-winner against Idaho on a penalty kick with under five minutes left in regulation.

UC Davis finished the match with an 11-8 shot advantage, but committed 14 fouls to the Pack's six. Stovall made three saves while Aggie goalkeeper Alexis Smith made four and allowed two goals.

Nevada will head off to play Weber State for its next match on Aug. 24. The Pack will be back in Mackay Stadium on Sept. 13 against Hawai'i with tickets on sale now.
