STOCKTON, Calif. – The Nevada softball team concluded its weekend at the Libby Matson Tournament with a 6-0 win over the Pacific Tigers (6-9). With the win, the Wolf Pack improves to 6-9 on the season, recording the first shutout of the season.
For the second day in a row, Nevada saw a solid all around effort from its squad that included timely hits, clutch defensive plays and dominant pitching. Junior
Alyssa Mendez led the Pack's offense with three hits, but it was sophomore
Sierra Mello and senior
Erika Hansen that had the loudest bats as each launched a home run.
With the Pack already ahead 1-0 entering the fourth, Mello led off the inning with solo shot to right field to push the lead to a pair. The home run marked the first of Mello's career. After back-to-back outs from Nevada, both freshman
Liz Cartwright and sophomore
Kenzi Goins reached base to set the table for Hansen, who blasted an opposite field homer to stretch Nevada's lead to five.
Hansen's homer marked her third of the weekend and second in as many. The five-run cushion the Pack gave to freshman
Julia Jensen would be all that she needed to seal the four-hit shutout, the first of her career. She finished the game tossing her seventh complete game of the season, striking out five batters in the process.
Up next, the Pack will travel to St. George, Utah for another set of five games at the Red Desert Classic. Nevada will open up play with a matchup against Weber State on Friday, March 2 at 12:30 p.m PT.
