TUCSON, Ariz. – It came down to the final singles match, but the Nevada women's tennis team (1-3) was unable to knock off undefeated Houston (6-0) on Saturday afternoon, losing 4-3 at the University of Arizona.
The Wolf Pack will play again on Feb. 22 when it travels to the University of California, Riverside for the first of three matches that week.
The Cougars won the first doubles match on court No. 2, but the veteran tandem of seniors Claudia Herrero and Blaga Delic defeated Tsveta Dimitrova and Sveva Mazzari 6-3 to tie the doubles matches 1-1. The doubles point came down to the result on court No. 3, where Houston sealed the victory and the point over Adriana Gergelyova and Maria Tatarnikova 7-5.
Houston would go up 2-0 over the Pack with a victory on court No. 2, but a 6-3, 6-2 victory by Herrero on court No. 1 would give Nevada its first point of the day. Herrero is now 4-0 on court No. 1 in dual play this spring.
Freshman Melissa Huchet would continue her strong freshman campaign with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Alison Mills on court No. 4 to tie the match. Lauren Alter of the Cougars gave the lead back to Houston after taking down Delic on court 3 by a score of 7-5, 6-1 but freshman Lili Fekete would come through for the Pack with a 7-5, 6-2 victory on court No. 6 to tie the match at 3-3.
The match came down to court No. 5, where Tatarnikova fell to Constanden Nicolaou 6-4, 6-3 and gave the Cougars the 4-3 win. The Pack dropped to 1-3 in dual matches on the season, with an 11-13 record in singles play and 4-7 in doubles as a team.
