RENO, Nev. – After spending three days in Long Beach at the Beach Tennis Winter Invitational, the Nevada women's tennis team will now look to its upcoming dual matches this spring season. The Wolf Pack grabbed a couple more victories on the final day of the tournament before heading back to Reno.
"I am very proud of the way we competed this weekend," said head coach Guillaume Tonelli. "We played tough teams and we were right there with them. It takes hard work and good preparation to get ready for the dual matches season, and we showed this weekend that we will be a tough team to play against."
The Pack started the day in doubles play against Long Beach State, where Nevada won one of three matches. Senior Claudia Herrero and freshman Anastaysha Gorbacheva competed together on court No. 1 to take down Lena Pacholski and Natalia Munoz 6-4. Senior Adriana Gergelyova and freshman Maria Tatarnikova competed as a tandem on court No. 3, but fell to Georgia Gulin and Carlota Casasampere 6-2.
Nevada battled the University of Wisconsin in singles play but was only able to get a win from Tatarnikova. The freshman defeated the Badgers' Christina Zordani in dominating fashion on court No. 6, 6-4, 6-0. Herrero took Lexi Keberle to three sets on court No. 1, but ultimately fell 7-5, 5-7, 10-8. Fellow senior Blaga Delic also took her opponent to three sets, but lost to Kelsey Grambeau 7-6, 4-6, 10-7.
"We are heading in the right direction and getting better every single day," said Tonelli. "We can't wait to play our first match in a couple of weeks in San Luis Obispo."
With its final tournament of the season in the books, the Pack will now shift its focus to its upcoming dual matches, its first being at Cal Poly on Feb. 2. Follow the team on Twitter @WolfPackTennis to keep up with the team throughout the spring.
