RENO, Nev. – The Nevada women's tennis team won four of its five singles matches on Saturday, setting itself up to finish strong on the the final day of competition on Sunday at the Beach Tennis Winter Invitational. The Wolf Pack looks to build momentum in the tournament before shifting its focus to dual matches for the rest of the spring.
Two of Nevada's singles victories came in dominating fashion, the first from senior Blaga Delic who only lost one game in her 6-1, 6-0 win over California State University, Northridge's Arpe Bagumyan. The second decisive win came from freshman Melissa Huchet, who defeated CSUN's Lisa Nosenko 6-0, 6-3.
The Pack's next two victories also came in straight sets, as Claudia Herrero earned a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Monika Van de Vondel from CSUN on court No. 1. Freshman Maria Tatarnikova gave Nevada its fourth singles win of the day when she defeated Long Beach State's Carlota Casasampere 6-3, 6-4.
The Wolf Pack faced Wisconsin in its doubles matches on Saturday, but fell in all three. The closest Nevada came to a doubles victory was with Herrero and freshman Anastaysha Gorbacheva, who fell to Wisconsin's Sara Castellano and MaryAnn Rompf 6-4.
Nevada will have a chance to exact revenge on the Badgers when it faces them in singles on the final day of the tournament tomorrow. The Pack will also see some of the same opponents again when it plays LBSU in doubles on Sunday.
