BERKELEY, Calif. – The University of Nevada women's tennis team finished its first day at the Cal Invitational in Berkeley on Friday. Senior Claudia Herrero, and freshmen Anastaysha Gorbacheva and Melissa Huchet all advanced to the quarterfinals in their singles brackets.
In the Blue Singles bracket, Herrero defeated Anna Sokiran from the University of San Francisco 3-6, 6-2, 6-1. She then proceeded to take down Kareena Manji of Saint Mary's in straight sets 6-4, 7-5.
In Gold Singles, Gorbacheva advanced to the quarterfinals after beating Anna Ramos Vinolas from Pacific 6-4, 7-5. Huchet, another Wolf Pack freshman, made short work of both of her opponents on her way to the quarterfinals in the ITA White Singles bracket. She started with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Jessica Kaye from Pacific and then proceeded to finish off Delaney Nothaft from Santa Clara 6-1, 6-0.
Senior Blaga Delic, who holds Nevada's all-time record for most doubles wins with former Wolf Pack tennis star Sheila Morales was victorious in the ITA White Doubles bracket with freshman Lili Fekete. The duo took down Abigail Bacharach and Grace Olyphant of Cal Poly 8-2. Nevada's three other doubles teams all fell in the first round of their brackets.
