AURORA, Ore. – The Nevada women's golf team earned a season-best finish of third Tuesday at the Rose City Collegiate, hosted by Portland State.
The Wolf Pack was on a roll through the early holes of the final round and got as close as a two-shot difference between it and eventual winner Cal Poly. Nevada struggled on the back nine however to drop to third place and finish at 16-over for the tournament (297-286-297=880). Cal Poly shot the same final round score as the Wolf Pack and won the event by one shot over tournament host Portland State.
Senior
Celyn Khoo tied her career best finish with a third place showing in the 75-player field. Khoo started off hot and was 3-under through her first six holes with a four-shot lead. She ran into some trouble though to close out the front nine, going triple, bogey, double on No. 7, 8 and 9. She settled back down on the back side and played those final nine holes at 1-under. For the day she totaled a 2-over 74 and finished at 1-under for the tournament. She fell just three shots back of individual winner Tara Finigan of Portland State.
The best Wolf Pack round of the day belonged to junior
Chaithra Katamneni, who fired an even par 72. She played a solid round, making two birdies and just two bogeys to jump 14 positions on the leaderboard into a tie for 12
th. Sophomore
Jenny Krause also made a 14-spot jump on Tuesday after tying her career low of 73 with three birdies and three bogeys. She finished in a tie for 22
nd place. Junior
Kaitlin Collom and senior
Jordan Keyser each had a rough final round as Collom carded a 6-over 78 and Keyser posted a 9-over 81. Collom tied for 33
rd, while Keyser tied for 44
th.
Nevada will take a three-week break from competition before resuming play at the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown, a course the team has played well at, on Oct. 22-14 in Henderson, Nev.
