FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The Nevada women's golf team opened the 2017-18 season on Sunday with the first round of the Ptarmigan Ram Classic, hosted by Colorado State.
It was a tough first day back on the course for the Wolf Pack as it currently sits in 11
th place out of 15 teams. Nevada combined for a team score of 300 (+12), which was mostly due to poor first half of the round. The lineup of five for the Pack settled down in the later part of the day for a strong finish. UC Irvine and Indiana were the only two teams to finish under par on day one as the Anteaters lead the competition at 3-under and the Hoosiers sit in second at 1-under.
"Celyn played steady, Chaithra had it going on the front nine, we just had too many big numbers today," said head coach
Kathleen Takaishi. "If those high numbers are just bogeys, we are in the middle of the pack."
As mentioned by Takaishi, senior
Celyn Khoo posted a solid round in her season debut, shooting a 1-over 73 to lead the team. Khoo had just one real issue during her round when she double bogeyed No. 12, however she also made birdie on her first two holes and two holes on the back nine. She enters the second round in a tie for 16
th place in the 84-player field.
Junior
Chaithra Katamneni and sophomore
Jenny Krause both tied for 44
th position on day one, carding 3-over rounds of 75. Katamneni played the front nine at 2-under par but got into some trouble after making the turn, going double, bogey, triple to start her back side. She finished strong though and made par on the last five holes of her round. Krause, whose 75 was one shot from tying her career high, played well, making three birdies on the day.
Senior
Jordan Keyser shot a 5-over 77 in her season debut and enters Monday tied for 57
th. She didn't have many big numbers on her scorecard but suffered five bogeys on the front nine. She improved on the back side however, playing the final nine holes at 1-over. Junior
Kaitlin Collom will look to rebound in round two after carding a 12-over 84 in round one, due in large part to just a few holes with big numbers as she also made 12 pars.
Nevada continues the Ptarmigan Ram Classic with the second round on Monday. Live scoring for the entire tournament is available on GolfStat.com.
