RENO, Nev. – Having won its last two games, including a home opener victory over USF, the Nevada Wolf Pack (2-1) volleyball team is headed to the Gonzaga tournament for three matches in two days.
Playing two matches on Friday and one on Saturday, Nevada will face off with Arizona State, Portland State and Gonzaga, respectively. The match against the Sun Devils is set for 11 a.m. on Friday, followed by Portland State at 5 p.m. Gonzaga will be the Pack's final opponent of the tournament, set for Saturday at 11 a.m. All of Nevada's matches will be live streamed via TheW.TV. "These teams are going to be a very good challenge for us and a great opportunity to get better," head coach
Lee Nelson said. "I mean, you look at a Power 5 opponent like Arizona State and someone who took us to five sets at our place in Gonzaga last year."
Nevada is making a return trip to Gonzaga after the Bulldogs came to the Wolf Pack tournament in 2016. The two teams put on a very exciting tournament opener with Nevada coming out on top, 3-2. It's been since 2003 that Nevada has played Arizona State. The two teams are 2-2 all-time, mirroring the Packs' record against Portland State.
Although just three matches thus far in the year, the Pack has shown that it plans on sharing the love offensively this season. With five players averaging at least two kills a set, it may be harder for opponents to key in on just one or two offensive giants to defend against. Senior
Madison Foley has recorded at least 10 kills in every match this year, while sophomore
Shayla Hoeft has set back-to-back career highs with 13 kills against Utah Valley and 15 against San Francisco.
