Gangi, Moore help Nevada to first win of the season over Hawai'i

Moore rushes for 216 yards; Gangi passes for four TDs.

RENO, Nev. (AP) - Ty Gangi accounted for five touchdowns, Kelton Moore became the first Nevada player to rush for over 200 yards in a game since 2012 and the Wolf Pack beat Hawai'i 35-21 Saturday night for its first win of the season, and the first career win for coach Jay Norvell.
 
Moore had 19 carries for 216 yards, the first 100-yard rusher for Nevada (1-5, 1-1 MW) this season, and added five receptions for 46 yards and a touchdown. Gangi was 25-of-32 passing for 278 yards and four scores and had a 17-yard TD run.
 
Hawai'i (2-4, 0-3) took a 14-7 lead when Dru Brown connected with Kade Greeley on a 42-yard touchdown pass with 3:55 left in the first half but, on the first play of Nevada's next offensive possession, Moore ran 43 yards to the 28, setting up Gangi's TD run. The Rainbow Warriors were called for three penalties and lost nine yards on their ensuing possession and then were called for two more, including targeting on linebacker Penei Pavihi, as the Wolf Pack went 66 yards in 26 seconds to take a 21-14 lead when Gangi hit Wyatt Demps for a 2-yard score with 18 seconds left in the half.
 
Moore added a 22-yard touchdown reception and, after a 75-yard scoring run by Hawai'i's Diocemy Saint Juste, Demps scored on a 32-yard catch in the second half. Demps finished with seven receptions for 111 yards.

Postgame notes
-Sophomore RB Kelton Moore posted an all-around career game. He finished with 216 rushing yards on 16 attempts, including a career-long 66-yard rush. He is the first Nevada player to rush for over 200 yards since Stefphon Jefferson ran for 247 against Northwestern State on Sept. 15, 2012 and is just the second player since 2010 to rush for over 200 yards. Moore also recorded career highs with five receptions for 46 yards and a receiving TD.
-Kelton Moore's 66-yard rush in the first quarter, was the longest rush by a Nevada back this season, and is the longest of his career. His previous long was 14 yards set at Fresno State last week. It was the longest run play by a Nevada back since James Butler broke one for 77 yards in the NOVA Home Loans Arizona Bowl in 2015.
-Junior QB Ty Gangi began the game 10-for-10 for 119 yards and a touchdown before throwing his first incompletion in the second quarter. He finished the first half with just the one incompletion, going 15-for-16 for 179 yards and two touchdowns.
-Ty Gangi's 17-yard touchdown run in the second quarter, which tied the game at 14, was Gangi's longest rush of the season and second rushing TD of the year.
-Ty Gangi finished the game 25-for-32 for 278 yards and four passing TDs. He is the first Nevada QB to throw four TDs in a game since Tyler Lantrip threw four against Idaho on Dec. 3, 2011. He accounted for all five Nevada TDs in the game (4 pass, 1 rush), making him the first Pack player to score five TDs in a game since Cody Fajardo (2 rush, 3 pass) vs. Boise State in 2014.
-Nevada posted 566 yards of total offense in the game, the most in a game since it totaled 570 against San Diego State in 2013.
-The Nevada defense held Hawai'i to just 1-of-8 on third downs.
-Hawai'i committed 11 penalties for 114 yards to Nevada's six penalties for 39 yards.
-Nevada averaged 7.9 yards per play in tonight's game, the highest yards per play average for the Wolf Pack since 2012 against Northwestern State.
-Senior WR Wyatt Demps caught two touchdowns in the game for the second time this season. He leads the team with six TD receptions and has 15 in his career. He also recorded 111 receiving yards in the game, his second 100-yard receiving performance of his career.
-Nevada had 13 explosive plays (rush of 15+ yards, pass of 20+ yards) in the game, seven pass plays and six rushes. The 13 explosive plays are a season high (previous high was five vs. Idaho State.
-The Wolf Pack's first touchdown of the game was the first TD scored by Nevada in the first quarter since the season opener at Northwestern.
-Junior DE Malik Reed's two sacks in the fourth quarter gives him 9.5 in his career, and his forced fumble on the first sack was the fifth of his career. Sophomore LB Gabriel Sewell recovered the fumble for the first time in his career.
-Nevada's 21-14 lead at halftime was the Pack's first halftime lead since the season opener at Northwestern and the team's first lead at Mackay Stadium this year.
-Junior DE Jordan Silva's sack in the third quarter was his first of the season and third of his career.
-Junior CB Vosean Crumbie's interception in the third quarter was his second of the season and gives him picks in back-to-back games.
-Not only was this the first victory for Nevada this season, but it was also the first head coaching win for Jay Norvell.
-True freshman Austin Arnold, junior Anthony Hankins and redshirt freshman Nate Brown made their season debuts on special teams.
-The team captains for tonight's game were senior OL Austin Corbett, senior WR Wyatt Demps, sophomore PK Spencer Pettit and junior NT Hausia Sekona.
-The all-time series between Nevada and Hawai'i now stands at 13-9 in favor of Nevada. Nevada has won six of its last seven against Hawai'i.
-The Wolf Pack's booster luncheons return this year with four dates set and a new location for 2017. Coach Jay Norvell's "Gritiron" luncheons will recap games to date and preview upcoming opponents at the luncheons, which are open to the public. This year's luncheons are $20 per person will be held at the Eldorado in Reno on Oct. 9 and Nov. 6, with one scheduled for the Carson Valley Inn in Minden (Oct. 23).
