Pack dominates in senior day win over Fresno State

Nevada honors seniors prior to the meet

RENO, Nev. – After honoring its seniors prior to the start of the meet, the Nevada swimming and diving team responded from Friday's loss with a convincing win over Fresno State on Saturday, 174-109. With the victory, the Wolf Pack improves its 2017-18 dual meet record to 1-1.

"It was great to honor our seniors with a win today," Nevada head coach Brendon Bray said. "All five that are leaving our program at the end of the year are absolutely wonderful people and it really has been a privilege to coach them."

Out of the 15 total events, Nevada came out on top and won 11, including a complete sweep of both diving competitions and the first eight events of the afternoon as well. Senior Sharae Zheng and sophomore Andressa Cholodovskis followed their strong performances from Friday by winning all of the events they competed in on Saturday. The two combined to win 10 events this weekend.

The afternoon began with senior Jaeger Turner recording the Pack's first victory of the day with a win in the 100-yard backstroke, swimming that event in 55.59. Junior Caitlyn Richardson placed third in that same event with a time 57.68.  In the 100-yard breaststroke, Nevada claimed the top two spots, courtesy of junior Jamie Reynolds (1:04.75) and Donna dePolo (1:05.17) finishing first and second, respectively.

Following Cholodovskis's win in the 100-yard butterfly, sophomore Diana Sokolowska put on an absolutely dominating performance in the 1,000-yard freestyle, where she won that event by nearly 16 seconds with a time of 10:31.55. In next three events, the Pack had two swimmers finish first and second to help extend its lead even further, heading into the first diving competition.

Zheng got things started with a bang, winning the 1-meter springboard with a convincing score of 320.40. She was followed by junior Sio I Lei and sophomore Toma Shmitova, who rounded out the top three divers in that event. Those three divers proceeded to continue their dominance as Zheng, Shmitova and Lei all placed first, second and third, respectively, in the 3-meter springboard.

After Nevada placed three in the top three in the 100-yard freestyle, including senior Emma Payne who recorded her third top three finish of the day, freshman Caitlyn McHugh helped the Wolf Pack add some insurance points with her win in the 500-yard freestyle that she swam in 5:07.18. Up next, Nevada will travel to Hayward, Calif. for a dual with Cal State East Bay at 1 p.m. PT on Saturday, Nov. 4.
