SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The University of Nevada's women's tennis team had a tough first day at the Santa Clara Invitational on Friday at the Degheri Tennis Center. The Wolf Pack won twice in singles and once in doubles in the final fall team event of the season. The invitational format is a round robin and continues on Saturday.
Sophomore Claudia Herrero (8-2) won her team leading eighth singles match of the season defeating Sybille Gauvain of San Jose State in three sets 6-1, 6-7 and 7-5. Freshman Delaney Phanco defeated Santa Clara's Elizabeth Stevens in straight sets 6-3, 6-3 for the Pack's second singles win of the day.
Sophomore Blaga Delic lost in 6-2, 6-3 to SJSU's Gaelle Red. Adriana Gergelyova fell 6-4, 7-5 to the Spartans' Marine Dans. Senior Monika Magusiak lost 6-3, 6-2 to Miyo Kobayashi of SJSU. Sophomore Sara Korzeniecki dropped her match 6-2, 6-1 to the Spartans' Justine Deleval. Junior Sheila Morales lost in three sets 6-0, 4-6 and 7-5 to Marie Klocker also of SJSU.
Herrero and Morales earned the Pack's doubles victory 8-6 over Chelby Cooke and Daniella Silva from Santa Clara.
Delic and Lea Schneider were trailing 6-5 when an injury forced the match to be stopped. Gergelyova and Magusiak lost 8-7 to Annika Schneider and Taisiia Andrieieva from Academy of Art University. Phanco and Korzeniecki dropped an 8-4 decision to Michelle Dandik and Paula Alcantara also from Academy of Art University.
