RENO, Nev. - Nevada (23-24, 12-9 MW) returns home for its final home games of the season, and only home games of May, this weekend. The Wolf Pack hosts GCU in a three-game set which, for Nevada, will determine its seed at next week's Credit Union 1 Mountain West Championship.
This weekend's series will run Thursday through Saturday, with first pitch set for 6:05 p.m. the first two games and Saturday's finale scheduled for 1:05 p.m.
All three games will be streamed on the Mountain West Network and the MW App, and on the radio on KPLY 630 AM in Northern Nevada and online on The Varsity Network app with John Ramey on the call.
ABOUT GCU
GCU (19-29, 9-12 MW) has plenty to play for this final weekend, being locked in a heated race with UNLV and San José State for the final spot in the six-team CU1 Mountain West Championship. The Lopes, at 9-12 in conference play, enter the weekend tied with the Rebels and a game ahead of the Spartans.
Jake Sanko leads the Lopes with a .335 batting average while designated hitter Trevor Schmidt leads the team in both homers (10) and RBIs (32). Cannon Peery is right up there in the power numbers, hitting nine homers with 11 doubles and 30 RBIs.
On the hill, Chase Frey has taken the ball in series openers and is 2-6 with a 4.55 ERA and 67 strikeouts over 61.1 innings. Cam Cunnings leads the staff with 19 appearances, posting a 3.69 ERA with three saves.
AGAINST GCU
This weekend will mark the first meetings between the teams since the Lopes came to Reno for a weekend in 2023.
The teams faced each other twice that weekend, with GCU taking the first game, 8-2, before rolling to a 9-0 win in the second.
Overall, Nevada leads the series, 14-7.
HEADED TO ARIZONA!
Despite not being in conference action this past weekend, Nevada clinched a spot at May 21-24's Credit Union 1 Mountain West Championship in Mesa, Arizona thanks to other results.
Losses by GCU (to New Mexico) and UNLV (to Fresno State) Sunday guaranteed that the Wolf Pack will play for a shot at an NCAA Regional berth next week. With Nevada 12-9 and both GCU and UNLV 9-12 with three games to play, a "worst-case scenario" of all three teams ending the season 12-12 would mean that the Pack gets the No. 6 seed based on tiebreakers.
NEVADA'S SCENARIOS FOR THE CU1 MOUNTAIN WEST CHAMPIONSHIP
While Nevada still has a chance to earn a share of the Mountain West regular season title (if it sweeps GCU and San Diego State gets swept by UNLV), due to tiebreaker scenarios the Wolf Pack will begin the CU1 Mountain West Championship in Thursday's (May 21) single-elimination play-in round.
If Nevada wins one (1) game this weekend, it clinches the No. 4 seed and would face No. 5 New Mexico Thursday at 6:05 p.m. from Sloan Park. Should the Wolf Pack be swept by GCU, it would be the No. 6 seed and would face No. 3 Air Force Thursday at 1:05 p.m.
