Ninth-inning rally sends Pack to victory at Stanford

Box Score Nevada 9, Stanford 6
Monday, March 2, 2026
Stanford, Calif. - Klein Field at Sunken Diamond

WP: Andres Castro (1-0)
LP: Toran O'Harran (1-1)

STANFORD, Calif. - Trailing by two and down to its final out with the bases empty, Nevada didn't give in Monday at Stanford. Sam Kane legged out an infield single to start a five-run rally as the Wolf Pack stunned Stanford, 9-6, at Klein Field at Sunken Diamond.

The Pack (5-5) was twice down to its last strike but the rally stayed alive as Nate Snakenborg singled and Jack Metcho reached on an error as Cardinal first baseman Rintaro Sasaki could not pick JJ Moran's throw in the dirt from third.

Rominic Quiban then pounced on Toran O'Harran's first offering, lining a single to center which scored Kane and pinch-runner Noah Blythe to tie it up. Junhyuk Kwon put the Pack in front with a two-run double to right-center . Jayce Dobie's RBI single, his fourth hit of the game, capped the rally and made it 9-6 Nevada.

Andres Castro, who worked a 1-2-3 eighth, allowed two singles to start the bottom of the ninth, but struck Moran out then induced a game-ending double-play ball to second from Jimmy Nati. For Castro it was his first win of the season. O'Harran fell to 1-1 for Stanford.

The win is Nevada's first over Stanford (5-7) since a 13-12 win in Reno on May 14, 2002, and first at Sunken Diamond since a 4-3 win in 2000. Monday's meeting was the first between the teams since 2015.

For Major League Baseball fans before 1973, Monday's contest was a nice throwback as each team's starting pitcher also batted in the starting lineup.

For Nevada, Dobie went four innings, striking out four and giving up five runs while at the plate he was 4-for-5 with a double and three RBIs.

His counterpart, Brock Ketelsen, gave up four runs with five strikeouts over 4.2 innings. At the plate, Ketelsen went 1-for-3 with a double.

Quiban finished the game 2-for-4 with three RBIs and three runs scored, while Metcho scored thrice and went 1-for-3 with a double.

Three Cardinal homers over the first four innings helped it build a 5-2 lead. Luke Lavin, who drove in three runs, hit a two-run homer in the second for the first runs of the game, then added an RBI groundout in the fifth.

Nevada tied it up at 2-2 in the top of the third as Metcho scored on a wild pitch followed by Dobie's RBI single, but a Moran solo shot in the bottom half put the Cardinal back up, 3-2. Sasaki's two-run homer in the bottom of the fourth made it a three-run game.

A one-out walk from Metcho in the Wolf Pack fifth started another two-run rally. Metcho came around on Quiban's double to center, and, two batters later, Quiban scored on Dobie's double to left to cut the deficit to one at 5-4.

Nevada returns to Reno where it will host Pacific in a three-game series beginning Friday at 6:05 p.m. at Don Weir Field at Peccole Park.
