Box Score RENO, Nev. - Nevada Women's Basketball hosted New Mexico in its final home game of the season, falling in a close battle, 63-56.
The game ultimately came down to the final quarter as Nevada (9-20, 5-14 MW) held its own for much of the first half, but began to lose momentum in the second. After outscoring the Lobos (21-9, 13-6) in both the first and second quarters, the game was flipped in the third and fourth.Â
New Mexico won the rebounding battle, most specifically offense, which created more opportunities for the Lobos. The Pack had 30 rebounds to their 36, 13 of those for New Mexico being offensive.Â
Nevada locked in from the beginning and scored on its first three possessions to take the advantage early on. The Pack continued its hot start through the first, ending the first 10 with a shooting percentage of 81.8 percent from the floor, and a lead of 18-16.
The Lobos jumped in front after a scoring drought by the Pack in the second, but
Britain Backus tied it at 23 with a deep 3-pointer.Â
Nevada turned up the tempo in the back half of the second quarter, holding the Lobos without a field goal for over three-and-a-half minutes, while going on a 7-0 run.
By the end of the second, the Pack was still holding a two-point lead.Â
The teams traded baskets coming out of the break before Nevada had nearly as many turnovers in the span of three minutes as it did for the entire first half.Â
The Pack fell into another scoring drought as the Lobos had the advantage for a majority of the third. Quarter three was the first quarter Nevada was outscored as New Mexico ended with the lead, 51-47.
Nevada entered the final 10 without a shot for the first three minutes before
Skylar Durley knocked down a jumper. After falling behind by as much as eight, a 6-0 run by the Pack put it back within two. Defensively, Nevada forced New Mexico into a scoring drought of over three minutes.Â
Down by three with two-and-a half to play, Nevada had several good looks from deep but couldn't get it to fall.
Skylar Durley led the Pack in scoring and rebounds with 16 and six, respectively.
Ahrray Young followed in scoring with 10 points, while Backus had eight and five boards.
Nevada will play its final regular season game on Tuesday at Utah State, with tip set for 5 p.m. PT.
