Wolf Pack fall to conference newcomer GCU Wednesday Night

Box Score PHOENIX, Ariz. - Nevada Women's Basketball fell to Grand Canyon on Wednesday Night in Phoenix, 65-51.

Shooting struggles for the Pack (7-10, 3-4 MW) in both the first and fourth quarters impacted the final result. Neither team had a good start as Nevada only shot 20 percent from the field in the opening quarter, and GCU (5-12, 4-3 MW) shot 25 percent.

The Pack struggled to find its rhythm early on, not scoring a field goal until three minutes into the game. From there, they fell into a scoring drought of over four minutes. Meanwhile, GCU went on a 6-0 run. Ahrray Young went on to have all of the Pack's field goals in the opening quarter.

Nevada turned things around in the second quarter, having a 6-0 run of its own and improving its field goal percentage to 50 percent. The Pack saw its first lead come just over four minutes into the second when Britain Backus had a steal and score. It was the only quarter where Nevada outscored GCU, scoring 18 points to their 15.

Despite the positives in the second quarter, the Pack ended the first half with no assists and no threes. They trailed by one, 26-25, at the break.

Into the third quarter, Nevada once again improved on its shooting from inside, going up to 53.8 percentage. The Pack also saw its first score from beyond the arc, going 2-for-3 in the third.

The final 10 started like the first. Nevada struggled to get shots to fall once again as GCU went on a 8-0 run in the first three and a half minutes. Defensively, the Pack couldn't stop the Lopes and were outscored 19-9.

The lack of assists for the entire game, combined with the turnovers, plagued Nevada. In 40 minutes of play, the Pack only had four assists while turning the ball over 14 times. The performance from the line was also a sore spot, only shooting 45.5 percent.

Skylar Durley recorded her second double-double of the season, dropping 12 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Ahrray Young also had 12 points, while Izzy Sullivan led Nevada with 15.

Nevada will return home to host Fresno State on Saturday with tip set for 1 p.m.
