RENO, Nev. - Nevada volleyball kicked off the Nevada Invitational on Thursday night with a victory over Eastern Washington, 3-1.
The Pack opened up the game scoring the first two points off of a block by
Jess Walkenhorst and
Kamryn Tifft, followed by an error on the Eagles. After the first few points, the first set was a back-and-forth battle as the teams fought for the lead. There were 11 ties and four lead changes in the first set alone.
The largest lead came late as Nevada had a three-point advantage of 18-15. Eastern Washington kept it close as the Eagles tied it at 18 and again at 22. The Pack were able to hold them off and take the opener with a final of 25-23.
Set two was just as close, this time Eastern Washington opening up with the first three points. A kill by
Bella Snyder initiated a comeback as the Pack went on a 4-1 scoring run to tie it at four.
Nevada got its first lead of the second with its 15th point off of a kill by
Mckaley Herr, followed by an error by Eastern Washington to put the Pack up by two.
The set mirrored the first as the teams fought for the advantage. Nevada wasn't able to hold off Eastern Washington, dropping the second, 27-25.
The third was once again a close set, each team never going up by more than three. Late in the set, the Pack went on a 5-1 run that started with a kill by
Haylee Brown, and was capped off with
Nicanora Clarke getting one of her own to close out the third, 25-23.
With a three sets to one advantage, Nevada had its most dominating performance in the fourth. The Pack opened the final set scoring the first seven points and forcing Eastern Washington to call a timeout. It began with an error by the Eagles that was rounded out with an ace by
Masyn Navarro.
Nevada continued to have the advantage as it held the largest lead of the game of 11, two times. With a 25-16 fourth set win, the Pack took the match, 3-1.
Brown led both teams in kills with 16, followed by Snyder with 13 and Clarke with 12. Tifft led in blocks, recording six, while
Audrey Jensen led in assists with 30.
Nevada improves to 2–4 on the season and will face Pacific on Friday at 5 PM, followed by CSU Bakersfield on Saturday at 12:30 PM to close out the tournament.
