Reno, Nev. - Director of Nevada Track and Field and Cross Country Shantel Twiggs announced the hiring of David Payne as Assistant Coach, Track and Field, and that Logan Stahl will move forward as Assistant Coach, Track and Field and Cross Country. Stahl, in his role, will oversee the Nevada Cross Country programs.
Â
A 2008 Olympic silver medalist, and All-America track athlete, Payne brings a vast amount of knowledge and experience to the team. Initially walking on to the University of Cincinnati Track and Field team, Payne worked his way up to become the 2004 Conference USA Outdoor Athlete of the Year, helping Cincinnati to an outdoor conference championship. Payne also earned two All-America honors in the 110m hurdles, in 2003 and 2004, for 3rd and 4th place finishes.Â
Â
"I am very excited to be a part of the Wolf Pack," Payne said, "my plan is to become an integral part of the team. I want to help us win a women's team conference championship, create individual conference champions, and send athletes to NCAA nationals and USATF Nationals to also again become champions!! I look forward to meeting everyone and getting started!"
Â
"We are thrilled to add David Payne to our coaching staff. He brings a wealth of knowledge and a championship mindset to our student-athletes," said Twiggs, "from being a walk-on to a Division I All American and clinching the silver medal at the 2008 Olympic games in the 110m Hurdles, our athletes can learn and greatly benefit from Coach Payne."Â
Â
Logan Stahl will move forward as Assistant Coach, Track and Field and Cross Country. Under his new role, Stahl will oversee the Nevada Cross Country program following the retirement of long standing head coach Kirk Elias.
Â
"The cross-country program will move forward under the continued guidance of Logan Stahl, providing consistency and stability for our student-athletes." Twiggs said, "I am excited to select Logan to oversee Nevada Cross Country and women's distance for Nevada Track and Field. Logan has committed himself to building the foundation of a successful program at Nevada. He is student-athlete focused and shows an unwavering commitment to help each athlete grow both competitively and personally."
Â
"Over the past six years I have grown as a coach at Nevada, and I am so excited to help lead our cross country team starting this fall. I want to say thank you to Coach Twiggs for the trust she has in me." Stahl said. "I also want to thank our staff and all the athletes I have worked with since 2019. Nevada is a special place and I am ready to help achieve any goal they set for themselves. Go Pack!"
Â
Nevada Cross Country will kick off its season August 29, at the USF Invitational in San Francisco, California.
