Five Wolf Pack student athletes named to CSC Academic All-District Team

RENO, Nev. - Nevada landed five ballplayers to the College Sports Communicators (CSC) 2025 Academic All-District Baseball Team.

Pitchers Alessandro Castro, Dominic Desch, Caedon Kottinger, and Ethan O'Neal, along with designated hitter Billy Ham, were all recognized for their academic achievement.

To be eligible for consideration for all-district recognition, nominees must possess a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.50. Position players must have played in at least 90 percent of their team's games or started at least 66 percent of the team's games. Pitchers must have made at least 17 mound appearances or pitched 25.0 innings on the year. True freshmen are not eligible.

Taking on the Saturday role, Castro went 4-1 with a 4.39 ERA and 32 strikeouts over 10 conference starts. The Tucson, Ariz., native started conference play well, picking up wins in three-straight starts at Fresno State (March 15), against New Mexico (March 22) and Washington State (March 29), then saved his best for last, tossing seven scoreless innings in May 9's 12-0 win at San José State which clinched for Nevada the Mountain West title. For the year, he went 5-3 with a complete game and 72.2 innings pitched.

Desch proved himself one of the top relievers in the Mountain West in 2025, posting a 6-1 record with 39 strikeouts over 39.0 innings pitched. He finished the season third on the team with 18 mound appearances, adding a save and posting a WHIP of 1.21, second-best among Wolf Pack pitchers with at least 10 appearances.

Kottinger, playing his final season in his hometown after three seasons at UCLA, was second among the Wolf Pack staff with 20 appearances. The Reno native struck out 12 over 20.0 innings of work, going 1-2 with a save.

In his second season as the Wolf Pack closer, O'Neal moved into the Nevada record books with eight saves on the season, bringing his career tally to 13. Leading the Pack with 22 appearances, O'Neal struck out 39 batters over 28.2 innings. Tuesday's honor marked the second-straight year in which O'Neal has been recognized by CSC.

In his first season as a full-time starter, Ham enjoyed a breakout season in which he batted a team-best .340 with a team-high 21 doubles to go with seven homers and 46 RBIs.
