Wolf Pack win home opener over Broncos

RENO, Nev. – Nevada Women's Tennis won its home opener 4-1 against Santa Clara, thanks to a clinching tiebreaker win from Marlene Foerster.

The Wolf Pack continues to be perfect in doubles play, winning all eight doubles points this dual season. Wiem Boubaker and Petra Janigova got the session started with a strong 6-1 victory, breaking the Broncos twice to start the match and then again to finish the match.

Amahée Charrier and Kennedy Robinson clinched the doubles point victory with a 6-4 win over Jillian Roa and Tian Yu Dong. Charrier and Robinson traded service games with Santa Clara until they broke the Broncos to take a 5-4 lead and capped the match victory by holding serve.

The doubles sweep was completed on court one. Each pair broke each other to start the match and did so again later to tie the match at 3-3. Up 5-4, Foerster and Silvia-Maria Costache broke Daniella Dimitrova and Velizara Fileva to win the match, 6-4.

The singles session moved fast, mainly due to Nevada winning opening sets 6-0, 6-0, and 6-1 on courts one, two, and six, respectively.

Charrier blanked her opponent in the top-flight match, defeating Dimitrova 6-0, 6-0 to put Nevada up 2-0.

Janigova broke her opponent, Juliette Krumholz, twice to start the match and again to win the first set, identical to her doubles victory earlier in the day. Holding her serve to start the second set, Janigova held a 2-1 lead when she broke Krumholz again. Janigova clinched a 2-0 day on her birthday by breaking Krumholz for the fifth time, winning 6-1, 6-2.

Anna Rahman finished her victory just in the nick of time, defeating Robinson 6-4, 6-1, seconds before the Wolf Pack clinched the dual.

Following a 6-0 win in the first set, Foerster had to fight back in the second set to get the Wolf Pack victory. Dong broke Foerster to start the set and held serve to take a 5-3 lead. Foerster won her service game and broke Dong to hold off a third set, tying the dual 5-5. Both players held serve, forcing a tiebreaker, which Foerster dominated.
Foerster took a 6-0 lead in the tiebreaker heading into the changeover. Smiling after Dong got her single point of the tiebreaker, Foerster rebounded immediately, winning the tiebreaker, set, match, and dual for Nevada.

The Broncos held leads in both unfinished matches.

Nevada heads into the back end of the doubleheader weekend with a 12 p.m. match tomorrow against Pacific at McArthur Tennis Center.
