RENO, Nev. - Nevada Baseball made it a clean sweep of the Mountain West weekly honors Monday, as
Peyton Fosher was named Pitcher of the Week and
Sean Yamaguchi took home both Player of the Week and Freshman of the Week.
Each honor is the first for Fosher and Yamaguchi, and the second of the season for the Wolf Pack in the player and pitcher categories.
Michael Ball and
Eric Valdez captured the first honors on March 10.
Fosher set the tone for the Wolf Pack's Mountain West sweep of Washington State with seven scoreless innings and a career high-matching nine strikeouts in Friday's 10-0, eight-inning win. Only one Cougar baserunner reached third base over Fosher's outing, over which he allowed just three hits and had seven of his nine strikeouts come over the final three innings, including striking out the side in the fifth. Overall, the 10-0 win marked Nevada's first shutout of the campaign.
Yamaguchi returned to action Saturday after missing the previous four games, and made an immediate impact in the lineup. Despite playing only two games, he batted .571 (4-for-7) with two home runs, five RBIs, and three runs scored. In his first game back, Yamaguchi went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer to break a 1-1 tie in the fourth--the homer proving to be the game-winning hit in the 9-1 Saturday win.
Sunday, led the way as Nevada completed the series sweep, hitting his second two-run homer of the weekend and going 2-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored in the 9-4 win. He again broke a tie, this time with his two-out, RBI single putting Nevada ahead 4-3 in the sixth as the Wolf Pack went on to score four times in the inning to open up a 7-3 lead it would not relinquish. Overall, Yamaguchi finished the weekend with an OPS of 2.054 (1.429 slugging and .625 OBP)
