Bailey Heydra and
Lucia Gabino competed on 3-Meter Springboard on Monday's first day of the 2025 Zone E Diving Championships, with Heydra finishing 12th and keeping hopes of competing in the event at the NCAA Championships alive.
While Heydra finished outside of the top eight, which would have secured an automatic qualification to March 19-22's NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships, the top-12 finish does keep the door open for her to compete on 3-Meter at the national meet. Any diver who automatically qualifies in one event (1-Meter, 3-Meter, Platform) at Zones may compete in any other event in which they finished in the top 12.
Lucia Gabino finished 24th in the late-morning preliminary round, her score of 258.30 missing the top 18, and a place in the final, by just 12.10 points.
Heydra rebounded from a 25.20 second dive, climbing back into contention and sneaking into the final in 17th with a score of 273.20. With eight automatic qualifying spots up for grabs and prelim scores carrying over to the final, Heydra was just 17.95 points out of the eighth spot.
Heydra opened well in the final, scoring 51.30 on her first dive with a 56.00 on the second of her six dives. But a 33.60 on her third dive dug a hole which would be difficult to climb out for a top-eight finish. However, with the top-12 finish still within grasp, Heydra rebounded with consecutive scores of 54.00 on her fourth and fifth dives, and claimed 12th with a 50.40 on her final attempt.
Heydra and Gabino will compete on Platform Tuesday, with prelims scheduled for 11:30 a.m.
