Match Recap: Women's Tennis |

Nevada Gets Top 50 win over Hornets, win sixth straight

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Nevada Women's Tennis made the most of its impromptu visit to Sacramento, defeating Sacramento State, 4-1. Despite the match originally scheduled as the Wolf Pack's home opener and having to make a trip to Sacramento on short notice, Nevada picked up the win against the No. 49 Hornets, extending its win streak to six.

The Wolf Pack took the early lead, winning the double-point with a pair of emphatic wins on courts two and three. Amahée Charrier and Kennedy Robinson opened the second flight match with a 3-0 lead, breaking the Hornets in its first service game. A huge game win gave the Pack a 4-1 lead before the pair finished the match, 6-2, defeating Maddy Ferreros and Irene Riva.

Nevada clinched the doubles point thanks to Wiem Boubaker and Petra Janigova's massive comeback victory over Lou Baudouin and Emilija Pranyte. The Hornets led 4-1 following their third service game, however, the Pack won back-to-back games to pull within a game of tying the match. Another break for the Pack gave Boubaker and Janigova a 6-5 lead before they clinched the match and the doubles point, 7-5.

The Hornets came out strong in the singles session, leading on three of the courts and going punch for punch on another. Ferreros led Charrier early in set one, breaking Charrier and holding serve to be up a break until deep in the set when Charrier turned her game around, eventually taking the set, 6-4. Charrier used her momentum from the end of the first set to fuel a 6-2 second set victory, putting Nevada up, 2-0.

Charrier's doubles partner, Robinson, also went 2-0 on the day, putting together a dominant first set, defeating Palina Saulevich, 6-2. Saulevich put together a solid second set, forcing Robinson to a deep set. Robinson eventually prevailed, defeating the Hornet 6-4 in the second set, giving Nevada a 3-0 lead over the ranked Hornets.

Riva grabbed the lone win for Sacramento State, defeating Boubaker 6-2, 7-5. Riva played a great first set, followed by an impressive second-set comeback, breaking Boubaker multiple times to win the set.

Lou-Anne Guerbert clinched the dual for the Pack with a flashy victory in the battle of the Lous. Guerbert and Baudouin went back-and-forth in the first set, eventually reaching a tiebreaker which Guerbert pulled ahead early in breaking a pair of Baudouin serves. The Pack's graduate student won the tiebreaker, 7-4. In another tale of momentum, Guerbert flew by Baudouin in the second set, winning 6-1 and giving a classic Guerbert celebration in response to clinching the dual victory.

Elsewhere in the dual, Marlene Foerster got a great start, winning set one over Reese Walker, 6-2. Walker, however, bounced back, winning set two, 6-1, and holding a 5-1 lead in the deciding set when the dual was abandoned.

Silvia-Maria Costache lost a tough first set, 6-4 before a great turnaround with a 6-3 set win in the second frame. Costache held a 1-0 lead at the dual clinch.

Nevada is set to make its second attempt at a home opener on March 8 at 12 p.m. against Santa Clara at McArthur Tennis Center. The match is the front-end of a back-to-back with a 12 p.m. match against Pacific scheduled on Sunday as well.
