RENO, Nev. - Nevada Athletics Director
Stephanie Rempe has officially announced a three-year contract extension for Wolf Pack Women's Track and Field Head Coach
Shantel Twiggs.
Â
"Coach Twiggs has been a fixture at Nevada for more than two decades, and we are thrilled that she will continue on as one of our longest-tenured head coaches," said Rempe. "Her passion for the sport, the University of Nevada and her team's shows in the record-breaking and all-conference performances of her student athletes. She, along with the addition of the RSCVA indoor track, will continue to grow northern Nevada's stature as one of the top track and field destinations in the West."
Â
Twiggs is currently in her 21st season as the Head Coach of the Wolf Pack's track and field program, and has had continued team and individual success throughout her time at the helm. Twiggs is excited to continue her career with the Pack and continue the growth that the program has seen over her tenure.
Â
"This is an amazing time for Nevada Track and Field history," said Twiggs. "I'm grateful that Stephanie has given me the opportunity to continue serving as the Director of Track and Field/Cross Country. The University of Nevada and the Truckee Meadows Community have been great to me and my family. This is truly a reflection of our coaches, staff, and student-athletes, who are committed day-in-and-day-out to move the needle in our programs."
Â
Twiggs most recently led the Mountain West Championship-winning 4x400m relay team, consisting of
Melia Middleton,
Annalies Kalma, Bonet Henderson and
Halyn Senegal, who won for the second year in a row, qualifying for the NCAA Outdoor Championships for the first time in school history.
Â
Twiggs has continued to bring in talent from all around the world, with star sophomores,
Magdalene George and
Meekness Dogonyaro, being two of the best athletes the program has seen in their respective events. George set the 60-meter Nevada school record of 7.29 at the Silver and Blue Invitational this season and Dogonyaro set the Triple Jump school record of 13.01 meters at the Don Kirby Invitational.
Â
Nevada Track and Field has been highly-acclaimed throughout Twiggs' tenure, tallying 21 All-America honors, and 20 Mountain West event titles (10 indoor, 10 outdoor) since joining the conference in 2012-13.
Â
Twiggs was integral in the effort to secure a deal with the RSCVA to bring an indoor track to Reno, and the introduction of the new facility has been instrumental to the team's success this indoor season.
Â
Coach Twiggs will be at the helm this week at the Mountain West Indoor Track and Field Championships, set for Thursday-Saturday in Albuquerque, N.M.
