BERKELEY, Calif. - California scored six times over the first two innings in Monday's series finale, and the Golden Bear pitching silenced the Wolf Pack bats in an 8-0 win.
Nevada (1-3) returns to Reno to begin an eight-game home stand with Friday's home opener against CSU Bakersfield at 3:05 p.m. The Wolf Pack and Roadrunners will play a four-game series Friday-Monday, Feb. 21-24.
Cal (3-1) loaded the bases on a single and a pair of one-out walks in the first before Max Hendron took a 2-0 offering from Wolf Pack starter
Jayce Dobie deep to right for the first-inning grand slam. Seth Gwynn hit a one-out, two-run homer in the second to make it 6-0 and chase Dobie, who fell to 0-1 lasting just an inning and a third, giving up six runs on three hits.
Four Cal pitchers combined for the shutout, holding the Wolf Pack lineup to just three hits, all singles, and striking out eight. Starter Ethan Foley allowed just two hits over the first four innings, being credited with the win, while Jake Guardiancic and Cole Tremain mopped up the final five innings, with Tremain getting the save by going the last three and a third frames.
Dominic Desch was a bright spot for Nevada Monday, setting career bests in innings pitched (3.1) and strikeouts (seven) while allowing just one hit in a scoreless relief stint. He was among five Wolf Pack relievers to hold the Golden Bears off the scoreboard from one out in the second inning through the seventh.
