Box Score PORTLAND, Ore. - Nevada faced Eastern Washington on the first day of the Portland Invitational Friday, coming up just short, 58-57.
The Wolf Pack (4-3) controlled the paint, scoring 40 points down low led by
Chloe Williams' first double-double of the season, scoring 15 points and grabbing 12 boards.
Ahrray Young recorded 13 points to go along with four rebounds and
Izzy Sullivan contributed 12 points and five rebounds.
Both teams struggled from deep as Nevada failed to hit a 3-pointer in seven attempts while Eastern Washington (3-3) went just 4-for-26. The Wolf Pack was further hampered by going just 7-for-13 from the line.
Nevada trailed by seven with just over five minutes to play before Williams scored four points of a 6-0 run to make it 54-53 with 1:07 left. The teams traded baskets before Nevada was forced to foul with 12 seconds remaining. Eastern Washington's Caitie Gingras made both free throws, leading to a Wolf Pack timeout. Out of the timeout, Young got an open look from deep but could not convert, with Williams quickly grabbing the rebound and putting it back.
With 2.9 seconds left, Nevada appeared to have forced a turnover on an Eagle inbounds, but the officials ruled that the clock started too soon. The possession arrow favored Eastern Washington, and the Eagles were able to inbound and get to the line. After both attempts missed, Sullivan grabbed the rebound but her desperation heave from just before half-court hit the backboard and missed.
Nevada will finish the tournament playing host Portland Saturday at 3 p.m.
