Box Score MORAGA, Calif. - Nevada women's basketball put up a fight on the road at Saint Mary's on Sunday afternoon, falling just short with a final score of 50-56.
Nevada came out with back-to-back free throws to get the early lead before a scoring drought gave Saint Mary's the advantage. With just over three minutes left in the opener,
Ahrray Young splashed a three to cut into the 10-point deficit.
A series of steals, combined with
Chloe Williams knocking one down from the charity stripe and Young with a good layup, allowed Nevada to cut deeper into the lead.
After one, the Pack were trailing, 8-12.
Nevada held Saint Mary's to only score from the free throw line through three and a half minutes of play in the second. Halfway through, both offenses began to pick up.
Each time the Gaels tried to pull away, the Pack answered back. Nevada went from being down by eight in the second, to coming within three off of a layup by
Amelia Raidaveta with two and a half left until the break.
Skylar Durley then followed it up with a made free throw to come within two. After a three from the Gaels,
Izzy Sullivan answered with one of her own to cut the lead down to just one.
After the back-and-forth, Nevada trailed, 21-24, heading into the second 20 minutes of play.
The Pack continued their aggressive play in the third, never letting the Gaels get too far ahead, even getting within one multiple times. Scoring was even, each team putting up 16 points.
With 10 minutes left to play in regulation, Nevada was down by just three, 37-40.
The final quarter was a struggle for the Pack, as they found themselves down by as much as 15. Nevada fought until the very end, cutting the lead slowly back down to six. It wasn't enough to overtake Saint Mary's, ultimately falling in the battle.
Young led the Pack with 16 points, plus three rebounds and a steal. She went 6-9 from the paint and 4-6 from three. Williams contributed with 11 points, four rebounds, three steals and a block.
Makayla Carter led in rebounds with nine.
Nevada will have a short break before returning home on November 21, hosting Alabama A&M at 6:30 PM.
