Match Recap: Men's Tennis |

Théate’s third-set comeback wins it for Nevada

HONOLULU – Nevada Men's Tennis moved to 2-0 on the season after a thrilling 4-3 victory against Hawai'i.

Hawai'i's third pairing, Andy Hernandez and Quinn Snyder, gave the Rainbow Warriors the early doubles lead, with a 6-2 win over Paul Théate and Max Contet. The Wolf Pack jumped out to a 2-1 lead early in the match; however, Hernandez and Snyder grabbed the momentum, winning five straight games.

On doubles court two, Youssef Kadiri and Rémy Trégourès traded service games with Hawai'i's Karl Collins and Diego Dalisay, bringing the match to 3-3. Collins and Dalisay pulled away, winning their service game, and breaking the Pack before winning their final service game to win the match 6-3, clinching the doubles point.

Nevada quickly overcame the deficit, winning the first two singles matches. Lucas Hammond took just an hour to defeat Collins, 6-2, 6-3. Hammond took control in the first set, winning six of seven games in a row. Collins began the second set up 3-0, however, Hammond found his groove once again to win six straight games and the match. Court six saw a similar pattern, with Contet winning five of six games to end his first set and coming back from down 3-0 to win his second set. Contet defeated Tian Hao Hou, 6-3, 6-4.

Nevada came within a point of clinching with Rayen Hermassi's second dominant victory in a row, beating Hernandez 6-0, 5-7. Hernandez held a 4-0 lead in the second set before Hermassi won four straight games of his own and broke Hernandez in a key moment to win the match.

Hawai'i made a valiant comeback attempt with Azuma Visaya, ranked 77th in the nation, defeating Kadiri, 7-6 (5), 6-0. Snyder tied the match with his court-four victory over Trégourès, 7-5, 6-3.

Théate's third-set comeback clinched the dual for Nevada. After winning the first set 6-3, Dalisay dominated set two, winning 6-2. Théate faced a 3-0 deficit in the deciding set but battled back to tie and eventually won the final three games of the match to clinch the victory for the Wolf Pack.

Nevada heads back to the mainland, facing UC Santa Barbara on Sunday, January 19, at 11 a.m. in Santa Barbara, Calif.
