RENO, Nev. – Nevada Men's Tennis finished the regular season with a rivalry victory over Silver State series opponent UNLV. After one trailing, 3-1, the Wolf Pack chipped away at the Rebels' lead, clinching the Silver State series point and a first-round match-up against San Diego State in the Mountain West Championships, next week.
Â
The Rebels took the early lead, winning the doubles point in a split session. On court two Taiyo Hirano and Illia Maksymchuk made quick work of
Loris Zisswiller and
Rémy Trégourès, sweeping the Pack duo, 6-0.
Matheo Coupu and
Youssef Kadiri tied the session, defeating Anton Ornberg and Jackson Atherton. The Wolf Pack and Rebels were tightly contested, trading breaks before Coupu and Kadiri won the final two games, taking the match 6-3. UNLV won the decisive match on court three.
Edgar Destouet and
Greg Valente traded service games with Dusan Rsovac and Thomas Navarro before the Rebel pair broke Valente's service game. The UNLV duo held their service games until clinching the doubles win.
Â
UNLV did not hold their lead for long as after just two games, Rsovac was forced to retire by injury, giving Kadiri the victory and tying the dual 1-1.
Â
The Rebels took back the lead with Maksymchuk's domination of Zisswiller on court two. Maksymchuk led Zisswiller 6-0, 3-0, before Nevada's senior retired, giving UNLV the 2-1 lead. Hirano gave UNLV their third point, taking down Valente on court six, 6-0, 6-1.
Â
The Wolf Pack come back began on court four with Destouet defeating Aaron Bailey, 6-4, 6-0. Bailey played Destouet competitively throughout the first set, but Destouet won a key break earning him the set victory. Destouet ran away with a quick set two victory, sweeping Bailey.
Â
Coupu tied the dual for Nevada, with a pair of 6-4 set wins over Ornberg. The two traded service games throughout the first set, but Coupu prevailed, 6-4. In the second set, Ornberg held a commanding 4-2 lead over Coupu, looking to force a third set. However, Coupu rallied back, defeating Ornberg, 6-4, once again.
Â
On court five, after several medical timeouts called by UNLV's Martin Jovenin, and a pair of score disputes from the Rebels, Trégourès clinched the dual for the Wolf Pack. Trégourès commanded the first set, defeating Jovenin, 6-2. Trégourès and Jovenin went back and forth, trading service games, before Jovenin broke Trégourès for a 5-4 lead. Nevada's freshman responded with his own break before Jovenin took a 6-5 lead. Trégourès broke Jovenin once again to force a second-set tiebreaker. Trégourès took 2-0 and 3-1 leads in the tiebreaker before Jovenin tied at 3-3 going into the break. Trégourès was dominant after switching sides, winning four straight points, including multiple unforced errors by Jovenin.
